they are a different pics at different times.

they are flares used for anti - missiles ironically. while some is "art" others is escape moves, try confuse guidance systems

They are called chafes or counter measures.  You should see the Germans in their Tornado's and C160's.  They also use what are called counter maneuvers in the air craft.  You should see some of the faces when those chafes are deployed and the pilot starts banking and rolling the C160.

 

They fire them as if there is no tomorrow.  They are used as decoys for SAM's and ATAM's,  They act as a heat source for the heat seeking missiles and the infra red targeting systems.  The missile then goes "dumb" and follows the chafe, instead of the aircraft
