Tyre Widths - going from 1.95" to 2.2"

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to go from 1.95" to 2.2" on any rim?

I'm still trying to figure out the whole tyre deal. Reason why I'm asking is I need new tyres and CRC have a good deal on a 2.2" folding tyre. Currently I'm running stock Kendas and after 750km the rear one looks like I might be able to squeeze in another 200km - I do downhill on tar on my way home and am heavy on the brakes

i've never had a problem going between a 1.95 and 2.2. cant imagine it'll be a prob unless you using a super-narrow, light rim like one of those sun-ringle lime thingy's. should still be fine.  what rims do you have?

Go with the wider tyres.

Only time you'd want skinny tyres is for mud.

And if you're a weight weenie

I have Alex rims that came with my Giant Rock.

I see the tyres I was looking at are dirt jumping and I need something more for commuting. Will rather look around a while first.

I weigh 95kg (from 102kg in March) so weight is not an issue.

Post a link.

some of the dirt/street tyres are quite when it comes to durability on road and not terrible off-road

Those rims you got there will be fine 2.2 tyres

If you using the bike only for commuting then look for slick tyres, bigger is better in my opinion. I think a skinny tyre looks ridiculous on an MTB

The "brave hucker" looks quite good and is 2.2 but out of stock

The Continental City Contact Reflex come in 2.1

These look good to http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=3244

ohhh, there's too many to mention here

Not saying you're a light weight, just some people spend a fortune to make their bikes lighter including sacrificing the durability of their tyres. Look at Burry and the boys.

(I'm no light weight either, 97kg last time I weighed myself)

I still maintain...If you want to shed ~3kg's of weight off you bike....

Go for a sh$t before your ride!!LOLLOL

Seriously, check out the more slick tyre options - there are ones that have a slick center tread and a more knobbly edge for the cornering....I think they will suit your cycling purpose perfectly.

I went from 1.95 Maxxis Ignitors to 2.2 Conti Mountain kings. All manufacturers do not measure the tyres the same. Some measure the carcass and other the outside of the tread. The biggest challenge would be frame clearance and not compatibility with rims.

Mampara, thats what I understand too.

Decided not to go through CRC and rather go to my LBS. Tyre prices on CRC seem not that good anymore - complements to Chris Jnr Big%20smile

I would rather be able to go to my LBS over the weekend with my rim/bike and check the the tyres out - taking up his time. And pay him R100 more (if that much) than buy from CRC to only find I need to post the stuff on the hub (3 weeks later).
