I want to have a set of wheels build with XT hubs, db DT spokes and Mavic rims. The choice for the rims are XM 317 Disc (445gr) and XC 717 Disc (395gr). I know all will say go for the lightest but what the verdict on strength. Will so much of the strength be compromised but dropping 50gr or will it be okay for serious XC racing.

Please not I am not interested in any other set-up so no use mentioning Stan's rims or other stuff.

Mavic XM819, they are already tubeless (UST) , no need for rim strips and super strong. 465g , but the strips probably weight at least 50 grams.

So more like 415 grams.

I just got a set of XC717's built on XT hubs with DT spokes. Really nice wheelset, slapped on a set of Conti Mountain king UST 2.2's with a stans conversion kit. Payed a shade over R4k for the whole wheelset brand new.

I think at the end of the day it matters how much you weigh really, I'm only about 65kgs so for me the 717's will be fine for trail riding and XC racing, although a bad landing with a heavier rider might render them into a shape not unlike a potato chip.

Hey Mampara

I'm very happy with my build of 317s on XT hubs. I've also got 819s on XTR hubs. Both can take the punches I throw and I weight between 87-90kg and like to do technical stuff. I previously had 317s on Mavic hubs with 22 spokes and it failed me big time. So as long as you go 32 spoke, which is the aftermarket rims you can't make mistake. So in short 2 years on XT and 317s and no truing or rebuild required.

I prefer the 819s because of the tubeless aspect - I don't like the tape and conversion kits - a beee-a--tch to take off on the ride as the strip attach to the tyre.

I'm currently also running 819s on Hope hubs - gggrrrrrrgggggrrrrgggrrrrr

I think that the 717 wheels (inlcuding strips & tape) will still be 200g lighter than the 819 set.

The 819's weigh about 550g by the time you have included the rim inserts for the nipples which should be 2x16mm and not the normal 14mm ones.

I ride the 819's because I didnt want to do the whole conversion with strips etc.  Next time I will look @ ZTR Arch or something.

I use a 317/XT/DT Comp build for training. Not the lighest at about 1.9 Kg but bombproof, touch wood. XT hubs also mean your'e never have any probs with spares.
