We've been kicking around the idea of a Spruit race, or races, help the guys who are really driving this build support. Obviously we'll need buy in from the city, but let us know if such an event would interest you.

Great stuff! It would be amazing if eveyone who rides the spruit gets behind making it safer, cleaner and a place for the whole family , commuters, races even...The spruit is a jewel in the middle of Joburg and could be enjoyed by a lot more folks if they knew what the area had to offer, and it  is  percieved to be a safe place to ride. If you ride from Alberts farm to the N1 and back, you can do a good 50km ride! A few possibilities (some requiring money and manpower); *signs marking the paths, including info for cyclists and pedestrians, suggestions such as bell so as not to 'surprise' dog walkers and other users.* An interested club or two willing to take on the responsibility of building basic bridges, etc...possibly using donations from hopefully the majority of users (pie in the sky?). *what about the guys who organise the night racing at Delta Park, they're obviously able to organise themselves? *dustbins *two paths*a number to call if you notice an overflowing sewer, dumping etc. *riders using the spruit often who are prepared to act as reservists on the spruit even if its just by wearing a shirt sponsored by some of our local armed reaction guys...to create a presence of some sort of security. *Spruit users kit (shirt) with proceeds going towards upgrade. *some sort of anti -erosion measure e.g. reroute path from time to time where possible. all out of ideas will try again later

I live close to Alberts Farm and last Sunday I rode around it before continuing along the spruit. That place has got such great potential to be a nice MTB playground. It's got a lapa and everything.

If you can think of anyone who might be interested in getting together to organise a day, or weekend of racing on the spruit - kind of a festival - pm me. The Mail & Guardian will try to help to make it happen, on the basis that funds and enthusiasm generated will ultimately go to regeneration and improvement of the trails.

nice one pistadex. good to see a good paper doing good work!

?

O'reilly will shoot you for that Wink

hahahaha! he's too busy barricading his chateau against the creditors to worry about me! always said it - and even posted about last friday's edition elsewhere on the hub - the m&g is a great paper. one of less than a handful of good publications in the country.

O'Reilly definitely has bigger problems than Holy ... The M&G wants to support this thing not just because the editor and the business editor are cyclists, but because we believe functioning urban environments are crucial to all of our futures. Of course it doesn't hurt that the editor has just moved up from Cape Town and wants somewhere to play, or that the business editor needs a place to ride when he isn't adding a 2000km extension to the Freedom Trail.

Heheh... Would be interesting if M&G's shareholders did buy out Independant and brought them back into SA. A positive move imho.

Anyway, good work pistadex et al. Already mailed ama rider Gauteng about the Spruit.
