My choice would be XT as it looks cool but the negative part is that unlike the Avids, they are not of a flip-flop design. This means that if you want to change which lever brakes which wheel, you need to reconnect them. Not too much of a biggy as the shop does it when you buy it. Also I would not put Shimano brakes when I'm running Sram. It looks stupid. But Avid (Sram product) does not look out of place on a Shimano bike. Another thing that also made me go with Shimano is the mineral oil. IF you happen to snag the hose and rip it out of the caliper/lever and the oil splashes everywhere you do not have to worry about damage to you or your frame/fork. Dot fluid is not good for paint.

just remember' date=' all that power is wasted the minute the pads grabs the disk and locks it up...

if you are on a downhill machine go Hayes or Formula.

if you on a XC bike you dont need that much power

and that is why I've got a 140mm disc on my rear wheel. Actually on the bike's rear wheel. I still stop and I saved about 10grams. smiley36.gif

I have ridden both XT and Juicy.

I have never been able to pull a stoppie with XTs.  They never bite hard enough for me.  I constantly pull stoppies with Juicy 5s.  I actually gave my set of XTs away for free.

My GF bike also has XT's.  I was testing it for a while and rode the bike for a week.  When I went back to my bike with the Juicy 5s on, I hit the brakes with the same force as I was using on the XTs and I went over the bars and broke my wrist.

The only brakes I ride now other than Juicy 3s or 5s is Avid Code.  Essentially the mother of all Juicys.

I have made one improvement to my Juicy's though, which improves the feel and power even more, and that's a conversion to Goodridge hoses.  Not only do they look superb, but the modulation and power increases as well.

Use it, don't use it.

Ok so no one is better than the other.....

Looks like I will have to use my own opinion here..

My XT'S work great - hauling my 98kg to a stop down hills etc..

I am looking to replace my wifes brakes - and want her to have great braking too' date=' currently her mech disc brakes fade - and struggle to pull her minute 47Kg to a stop...

I will rethink the whole thing...

I want simple easy excellent brakes which will work for her..

Looks like Shimano is tops on that score...

I wish my wifes brakes would fade, or break al together, espesially if she was weighing in at 47kg  LOLEmbarrassed
