For claritys sake and to teach you okies in the Souf a fing or 2.

(I'm excluding cannondale specific cranks)

You get two types of crank, those with the spindle attached and those that have not.

Those that have the spindle attached use Hollowtech (or Hollowtech type) Bottom brackets.

Those that have no spindle attached can use either a Square taper or an ISIS bottom bracket.

ok, so its time to decide.

race face duece at R2800 (09 model on sale on the hub), or the XT from chris willemse.

how does the deuce compare with the XT? From the sounds of things the XT bb is more reliable and I need reliability

Hi Slowbee.

I see CWC cycles have the XT crankset on special for R1699. I think it is a no brainer. I am very happy with my XT crankset

Steve, the Xt crankset is apparently the 770. and apparently there is some issue between the 770 XT and the 775 XT.

Slowbee.

I went to the shimano website there is no M775 Crankset. There is a 770 and 771-K. The 770 is the one freely available. The only difference between the two is that the 771 is heavier, has an aluminum Middle ring not steel, and is compatible with a chain guard.

I hope this helps

weight' date=' not worried really

cost, partially concerning, I dont want to spend a fortune for very small differences (and also dont like the carbon route, although not sure why, its not like I am going to break them)

reliability, yes, and also readily servicable and easy to do (but I think that more about the bearings inside)

Actually I have a pair of carbon MTB cranks that will say otherwise.  Pulled the pedal thread right out of the arm.

Hi Slowbee

I see that CRC has a special on the  Race face Deus XC 2009 models. You can get the black Race Face XC for R 1577 excl 15.4%, much better than R2800!

Steve, then one still has to buy the BB, and then add postage, and it takes a coupla days.

It looks like I may go the XT route simply to save money. On Bike Radar there are some issue with the crank arm breaking as they say XT is for llightweight riders - but it also seems like loads of other riders on the hub love their XT cranks. I just dont want something to go wrong at the desertdash with a crank as that would be a real disaster.

Hi Slowbee I am sure the Raceface includes a BB

? All 2008 Race Face XC cranksets feature our new

'EXI' interface external bottom bracket system for easier crank

installation and removal with standard tools and fully adjustable

chainline.

But in any case. I don't believe that XT cranks are made just  for lightweight riders (maybe XTR). XT cranks must be the most popular cranks  on MTB's. Look at any race and it like every second person has one. I am sure if there were issues with their strength and durability it would have been posted on the hub already

gotta agree steve.

my doubts on the race face are because of what a few guys have posted on this thread. And also the fact that there have been very few negative comments on the XT, even if it is the 770.
