My front shock is a Rock Shox J2, i don't know if that influences the answer to the following question at all.

If the shock is locked out, and it takes a bit of a knock (landing hard from a jump, rock or pavement) can it get damaged at all?

Yes it would, and probably untrue your front wheel if you jump/land hard.I dont think the j2 has it as it is a coil shock, that function is on the higher end air shocks

The lock-out function is unrelated to what type of spring the fork has. Lockout can be applied to coil, rubber or air.

The lockout works on the damper side and restricts the movement of oil between two chambers - typically with a blow-off, as was suggested.

Anyone know a good site with info and cool animated pictures for stupid people to show how the different shocks work?
