ConfusedHi all

I need some help.

What is the better MTB to buy.

The Specialized Stumpjumper comp or the new Trek EX8.

Secondly, what is the difference between Specialized?s FCR vs. Trek?s ABP and which is best?

My verdict Stumpie for sure....

Ive ridden the stumpie and can tell that the FSR system works great especially climbing and then obviously the descents, the link eliminates chain bobbing and serves for a smoother ride.

The stumpie has the Fox Triad shock which has the 3 options,  1) lock out 2) Open 3) ProPedal pedal whereas the Trek has the Fox Float RP2 w/ Pro Pedal, rebound.

Components wise they match up main difference is Spez has sram and trek Shimano- I prefer x9 over xt though.

From reviews it seems as if the tires on the trek is worth nothing also the grips but can't talk from experience.

For the Abp pivot check this out

For FSR pivot this

Go to the Ride Before you Buy at Groenkloof this weekend - If you can get me off the Stumpy then you can test it there - nothing like riding the actual bike

Go with the Trek. The SJ is an under performing, overrated bike. Comparing ABP to FSR is a bit like comparing ABS to EBD.

ABP is a pivot design to aid suspension under braking. An it works.

Spez Brain Suspension technology is not close to Fox, Rock Shox, Manitou, DT Swiss and even Magura these days.

Setting their shocks and forks up almost always requires some form of compromise and prepare yourself for a blown seal or two and plenty spikes. If the bike comes with Fox all the way through there's hope, but the geo is essentially a LT XC bike and not really a Trail bike.

I agree with crow.

Spec overrated, rather buy a Merida (from the same factory) for cheaper and a proper Fox Shock or the Trek.

My 2009 Stumpie Comp is awsome...love it more than the Scott Genius. The specs are brilliant. I had XT rims and used them. Just convert the DT Swiss X420sl rims with bontrager strips and you go tubeless!!!20090916_012610_Stumpie_2.jpg

What is your budget, where do you ride most often and what type of riding do you do most often. XC, trail, marathon or all mountain?

There are lots of good bikes out there for that money, but your best bet for value for money and an allround excellent bike will be the Giant Anthem X1. R17k will buy you the just as good value for money X2 at my LBS, but for R25k go with the X1.

Comes with a Sid and other top quality components and the ride is one of the best out there. In any price range.

Frame has a lifetime warranty and thanks to its popularity back up is good and spare parts in abundance.

Whatever you go for, you'll have to upgrade your rims to tubeless (XT rims or whatever)....they make life so much easier....2009 Specialized Stumpie Comp goes for R26,000. The stumpie tyres (S-Works, The Captain are already 2-bliss "tubeless". As said before...I love my STUMPIE!!!

Well Burry didn't have a problem riding a spez to his victory so...

I say make a poll so people can vote.

My choice def the Stumpjumper comp, it comes with a fox fork and fox shock so good value there, If you can go to Groenkloof nature reserve on Saturday, there is going to 13 test bikes from Spez and you can try them out for yourself on some lekker offroad terrain!!!
