Assuming you never crash, does the integrity of a helmet deteriorate over time ?

I have a trek helmet that I have had for about 6 years now. Is it time to move to a new one ?

What about the Bell's that have a life guarantee (or is it warantee)?

Slow, my brother in law is an engineer who gets hard-ons with topics like this. He is an avid Motorbiker and gave me much insight into helmets: both motorbike and cycling.

It comes down to how often you wear your helmet. Actually more the bumps it gets from putting them down, hanging them up, etc. Over a period of time the constant "energy-absorption" (as my boet-in-law would say) of the helmet causes it loose some of it effectiveness.

As it all depends on how careful or careless the individual is the time to replace could be from 1yr to 5yrs, or even longer. It just depends on how long for you a piece of string is.

For me (I commute daily) I will be replacing my helmet every 2yrs. Same will go for my son. But for my wife it will be more like every 20yrs LOL
