Fox RP23 shock

My Fox RP23 is started to leak oil through the air valve when removing the shock pump. Releasing the air pressure by pressing in the valve pin produced a rather large squirt of oil.

I hope this can be fixed with a air sleeve service or is a damper service also required?

Unfortunately not. The air sleeve has very little oil in - less than 5ml to start off with - and it is thickish and consumed quite quickly.

Therefore' date=' if yours squirted, it indicates a thinner oil and more than 5ml. It can only come from one place - the damper leaked into the air chamber.

Time for a full service.

Thanks for the bad news JB; I thought this might be the case. Ouch

Will get the LBS to send it in to the agents.

Shock has been in use for one year since new. Will check Sporttracks for kms tonight.

Checked my records: Bought the shock 2009-02-06 and did 1200km since then, which is not a lot.

Is it normal to need a full service after 1200km ??

That equates to roughly 60hours on average.  Normally front shocks are supposed to be serviced every 80hours, so I've heard.  So this might be a bit premature after 60hours.

My shock also leaked a small amount of oil when removing the shock pump.  I don't think it is such a big deal.  Better be safe than sorry.  My 1st service after 2.5 years cost R375.  I should have done it more regularly I suppose.

According to the Fox manual, rear shocks require an air sleeve service very 8h Shocked for muddy conditions and every 30h for dry conditions.

Full service every 100h / annually.

My shock has not been serviced at all (and I ride in the wet Western Cape) so I guess a service is due; Sporttracks says 97h for the 1200km (I don't race hard) .

Will definitely attempt the air sleeve service myself next time; Not going to send it in every 8hs LOL.

Where is the best place to source the rebuild kit / seals in the Cape?

BTW - my next fork service workshop in Jhb is on Saturday 10 October in the afternoon. If anyone is interested in an air sleeve service workshop that same morning (perhaps just before the fork service workshop)' date=' I'll consider it, depending on demand.

The format is usually a short talk, a demo and then hands-on doing the job. It is dirty, slippery and full of surprises (usually supplied by hapless Marzocchi and Manitou owners).

Johan - please will you post (or PM me) cost, venue, booking details of your workshop.

I'm interested in air sleeve and fork sessions, if possible.

Then you have to inflate it - with NO2 (nitrogen) or sommer just air. The problem here is usually a special adapter that fits into some proprietary valve gadget. I won't suggest a DIYer do this unless he's really determined and his bike shop really annoyed him.

Hi Johan,

Have you refilled the chamber with air instead of Nitrogen before? Got an idea what the pressure should be?

My RP-2 recently started leaking oil when operating the lockout lever and I'm feeling like opening it myself. I did take out the rebound and lockout lever/knob in 2008 and managed to get the pushrods back but think one of the seals there is letting rebound chamber oil out now.

Regards

Jo

Hey Taygan,

I take it this problem was sorted out and confirmed to be fixed and working 100%? The build is happening tomorrow :):):):):):)
