How to fasten/tie down bike without damage

Just wandering how you fasten your bike on a bike rack (I have a Thule RideOn 942 ) without damaging the paint etc.  The Thule works great, but the rubber sleeve provided to protect the bike did not last long, then I used an old tube around the upright with some success ? but somehow there is still damage to the paint<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Maybe it is unavoidable due to vibration, potholes & speed bumps ? there will always be something that causes the bike & rack to shake violently ? but maybe you?ve discovered something that limits the damage to the bike

I?m getting a beaut of a MTB soon, and really want to avoid any marks from a bike rack ?

Ask your IT dept. for the blue foam spacers that comes with new server boxes, they look like angle iron (only much softer and lighter) and works great for bike protection. Cable tie strips to your rack. If this fails, get some sound proofing foam strips from Builders Warehouse. It is about 20mm wide, 10mm thick with some self-adhesive backing. This works fairly well but needs to be replaced every now and again because it compresses.

Wouldn't it be great if someone designed a neoprene "condom" that would fit around the bike when being transported? I've only had my bike for 6 months but there is rubbing / wear on the frame and top of the fork - very irritating!

I use pipe insulator that you get from the hardware, cut it to size, split it and fix where necessary using a cable-tie(s).

What I do find frustrating is travelling on dirt roads - you set off with your bike in pristine condition and arraive with the entire thing covered in dust smiley7.gif

That is the exact reason why I carry my bikes on the roof. Also to avoid other cars in the parking lot.
