I thought I was a pro at bleeding my XT's without messing but I thought wrong... anyways I now have managed to get my brake pads wet with mineral oil.

I've read elsewhere that this usuaully renders the pads useless and they have to be discarded

Could I not rather do one of the following:

- Sand down the surfaces with sand paper

- Bake / heat up the pads causing tehm to dry out

- Just use them as is and over time the pads will become efficient again.

?

You can try all three but you need to clean them in white spirits, drop them into a bottle with white spirits and shake the bottle, then bake them and then sand them. also you must clean the discs with white spirits and possibly sand them and wash them again with the white spirits...

A tip for future bleeding, remove the pads fron the caliper and put them far away from where you're working, also remove the wheels and put them far away then start bleeding....when finished bleeding clean everything including your hands with spirits before putting the pads and wheels back.

Best way to get the pads all 100% shhhh its a secret lol

The problem with the oil is that it soaks in2 pad and softens them up a lil, u can clean the pad of the surface oil but not the oil that is soaked in

SO

Take the pads, soak them in meths (the purple spirts lol) leave them in there for a few minutes so the spirits soak in, take them out, put them on the driveway and light them with a match or lighter, this pulls the oil out and burns it and the heat hardens the pads up again. (should burn for about 10-20seconds)

Scrub them up a lil with soap or cleaner 2get the burnt oil residue off and ur Snorted bud Thumbs%20Up

Thanks guys smiley20.gif

Will let u know which option works best for me

Also wanted to know, next time do I have to use the Shimano branded mineral oil or is there a cheaper substitute?

I agree with the meths and burning thing.

When you done, you can drink the rest of the meths!! (just don't forget to pour meths through some bread for a smother tasting drink...)

PS: you might want to compliment the meths drink with some BB tobacco and news paper.

Ragy  do a search onthis here site....this issue was covered not so long ago.

The jury is still out on this BUT I think it does not matter as long as it is definately mineral oil and nothing else...

I bled my shimano brakes a while ago and replaced the "Shimano gold" with another mineral oil (which I actually got from LBS - they also use cheaper mineral oil!!)....So far - zero difference!!!

Hi

the burning trick works (used it many times to 'fix' car brake-shoes when the seals would leak).

Also, as long as it is mineral, you ought to be OK.  Redone my Magura more than a year ago with substitute, and no problems.
