Ok, so about 6 months ago there was a whole bunch of tire treads on the hub, basically Conti's Mountainking- Racekings were rated, and racingralphs got votes to. Maxxis got votes for durability and I went and did my own thing..got WTB from CRC

So Im selling my HT and wont want to ride it on the Eselfontein race this weekend. I know Its "last minutte" but I am considering the Larson Mimo foldable(exception series) conversion.

what do you know about them? I have ridden a maxxis foldable converted on the front before and had not had any issues for 2 years!. I really need to save weight on my Blur cause she is sitting at 13kg with those 2.3 smallblocks. So a set of these will drop almost 500g! I have a tubliss ready Bontrager I can put on the rear( might just do that as I dont like taking chances on the rear. especially not when on a 5'' bike riding eselfontein.

oh and those who I know me know I dont like going slow on the Desends.

I know this is what Kev use to race- all conditions all the time.

You can convert any tyre to tubless, however the mimo's aren't great in durability Fritz Peinaar rode them and cut them when they first came out...

Bos, don't try change your winning format day before the race just drink more beer - carboload boet!!!

I have a 2.3 Larsen wirebead (42a-so its soft) that works like a bomb. Has a bit of wear but is pretty tough. Give me a shout if you keen.

Otherwise good luck mate - I am very jealous.

It ended up being a 1.95 mimo, which was just to thin, looked like cyclocross tires. I opted for a Monorail- foldable, which we converted. weighs around 530g, which would be very light for a 2bliss tire which It isnt, but it works a bomb.

Oh bro, where the bluddy hell were you guys.. My word there is no such race in the world. The downhill from the top of the long climb was 7.5 km! of the best singletrack you can imagine. At the top I had just broken clear of the bunch with no 2 and 3 girls and 2 guys, by the bottom I was so far ahead I could not see them anywere.. some sections one would be going about 50km/h on thin rockey singletrack(bridaltrailstuff) just winding down the mountain. there were some sections so steep I couldnt stop intime to ride down them, so I just launched it! OMW what a rush, rock stepdowns, rock gardens etc.. my best moment was definately when 3 guys were sitting in a bundle dabbing and trying to get through a rockgarden full of gravestone like rocks , I just flew passed without them trying to make a move. One cant help feel like , "who da man" even though its just im your own little worldWink.

I cant say I would have had the confidence to ride caution to the wind as always knowing I had that ligt mimo on.

I think I would race them in the caroo to coast- or winelands based races, even knysna as the course was fast and no real technicalitys anywere.

however, Eselfontein is a MTB race, the climp was way worse than I remembered 670m in 9km, but it was all singletrackDead

But the reward was so so sweet, overshadowing the bloodsweat on the climbs.

Next year, you have no excuse. Actually, dude we should drive out one sat or sunday, and just go do it. Its open year round and after the rain this weekend will be a sweet ride!

Shot for the replies on tires guys.

Glad to hear someone else did Eselfontein. I've done it 5 or 6 times now and I think it rates as one of the best in the country!

I've converted both Mimo's and Monorails to tubeless without any problems. personally I don't like the Mimo's very much and I seem to recall that they weren't as light as Maxxis advertise either.

Monorails are good, otherwise try folding Crossmarks or Spez Fastracks.  The folding Kenda SB Eights are tougher then they look, but are sketchy in the loose stuff.

Jea right on.. Eselfontein is the kind of race that people who just go ebnter the longroute even though they havnt ridden for a longtime - regrets! ask me 3 years ago. and the 35' heat didnt help, this last race was perfect though. less people than normally aswell, shame for Deon and the event but good bor us as less people on the trails means better riding.

as for the tires. I have ridden Crossmarks foldable-converted for 2 years without punctures, so I trust Maxxis. I have also ridden the lust ires many a miles. I just need to do some serious weight savings as I will not have a HT to race anymore. so for me, saving 600gramms on my wheels sounded like something worth investigating..

So I now have a Bonty XOX tubless on the rear (worked very well) its around 560g, and the mono in front now. I found it didnt hook up that well in Grit/ corse gravel in some of the eselfontein corners, mabe because the knobs are not that deep. but hey, now I know. And like I always said, There are so many wallys out there that just cant ride that blame everything on tires.. I recon its 70% ability and 20% tires

Yeah Bos - I think we should make a mission out there sometime. End of year sucks, just have so much to get done. But i hear it is an awesome ride as long as you do it out of summer time....

I am getting my grubby paws on some 2.25 Xmarks (folding) if you want some for your trail bike - and you wanted to ride a hardtail....tisk tisk
