Just some details I promised to post.  Michael does not take individual clients anymore but his brother does.

Here is Morne's detail.

phone: 082 564 1904

He does all dives: Seal, Wreck, Reef and Shark. I know he dives with 7gill sharks but I am sure some others as well but for that you need to phone him. (Info from one of the ladies working with M)

A lot of discussion goes on here in Gansbaai re the sharks, especially amongst us not working in the industry.  There is a theory that sharks cannot see the people inside the cage because of the confusing picture the metal frame gives (electromagnetic image).  Anyway we take a friends rubber duck and go and look at the sharks during winter when they are around the island.  Biggest so far was a 6.5 meter female - scary.  It's the girth that is so impressive.  During summer they come very close to the beach and as it is mating time (early summer I think) they can be quite aggressive and will chase most things - including ski's!!

Below are some gif sequences taken by Chris Fallows in False Bay

What is wrong with chum, it is just blood in the water. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In the game parks we build watering holes to attract game.

I'm against the feeding of sharks that definitely creates a behavior change. Sharks are designed to follow sent trails in the water, they do this every day. You either find a natural one from say a dead whale or you create one.

Sharks are regarded as scum, and many sports and industries kill them off for fun or just in plain disregard.

Shark tourism is actually helping to stem the tide, because having them around equals? money. Take Aliwal Shoal, you have two options Wreck or Sharks diving, The reefs aren't the great and with the current running most days, the majority of people dive in hope of seeing shark.

I think not allowing responsible Shark diving and shark attraction methods would do more harm in the long run.

More people talk fondly about sharks through these encounters than ever before.

Good point - not a lot of people are complaining about the more than 100 000 sharks that are left to drown for the sake of shark fin soup

One of my favourites, a pic I took of a Tiger circling us off Protea Banks in Durbs.!

I have been scuba diving for 25 years, I love it, its my passion and I have dived and attended seminars all over the world.

People think that by chumming or feeding sharks it makes them associate Humans with food, according to research, this is not true. A year or two back I went diving in the Bahamas for the third time and enjoyed a number of shark dives where the sharks are actively fed, there are dozens of links or go to Stuart Coves website, they have never had a fatality and they feed the sharks daily, sometimes twice a day.

At Stuarts Dives he has an optional seminar you can attend run by the Miami Aquarium and the speaker is a renowned scientist, in his words, "Sharks are opportunistic feeders, if food is available, they will congegate, if not they will move off elsewhere. More people are killed in the USA by Coke vending machines falling on them than by shark attacks." - End Quote.!

Great shots Zeepee, I have done it as well, but I took slides and prints, didnt have a digital underwater camera then.!

Guys, I am not knocking the industry, its part and parcel of the conservation of animals in general.

In terms of baiting the sharks (chum included) it ust doesnt sit right.

I also agree that artificially filled waterholes are also not right - but in confined space where natural movements are prohibited due to fencing that is a different story (thinking of the wildebeest migrations stopped due to fences in botswana).

Putting chum into the water, to get them to come to you so you can see them, doesnt sit right. Its like using a dead animal tied to a tree with bleating animal noises to attract the lions and leopards so they can be shot (ok, the sharks are not shot).

But again I say - I dont think its right - I cant exactly put a finger on it, and no, I am not against it, it serves a purpose.

Yah, fair enough Slowbee, it dont "sit right" with a lot of people for the same reason, I understand, but when you think about it, it really do's no one any harm and if and when the food source stops, the sharks just move off in search of food elsewhere.

Actually in the Bahamas this activity is so popular that it contributes significantly to the tourism activity on the island.

Read some more about it here - http://www.stuartcove.com/

Would it not be great if we could cultivate an industry like that here.? We have everything, (including the sharks - haha) yet it remains a very small largely untapped market.

The sharks should stay in Gansbaai, for the same reason they stay in False Bay.  Plenty of seals - Geyser island is probably the most packed seal island I have ever seen!
