Nope, Flowta is correct.

If I remember correctly the jockey allows about 1mm of float so to make it work you need to set it for the middle sprocket to limit the amount you will be out at the top and the bottom.

The barrel does change the amount the derailleur shifts.

Barrel adjustment only changes the relative positioning of the derailer, the stroke a shifter shifts for one click would be predetermined by the manufacturer and is not adjustable.

That given link explains it all pretty well (thanks ox_wagon). It might work most of the time, but unless its kept perfectly tuned it will cause shifting problems eventually.

That's not a problem because the first click of the shifter always

pulls some extra cable so as to take up any slack, with indexing of the

top sprocket provided instead by the mech's high-gear stop screw. The

low-gear stop does a similar job at the other end of the cassette, so

that only the intermediate sprockets are actually indexed by the

shifter. This is part of the reason some "incompatible" combinations

actually work okay ? at least when new. With only seven out of nine

sprockets dependent upon the subtle relationship between cable pull and shift ratio

and with indexing set on the middle one, the maximum shifting error is

only three times the error per click. If, for example, the mech shifts

4.55mm instead of 4.35mm, the most it'll be out is only 0.6mm, and only

in next-to-top or next-to-bottom. The rest of the reason is that the

guide pulley can float about half a mm side to side, allowing at least

that much misalignment between mech and sprocket without any nasty

noises.

so you saying that you can use a 9spd shifter on 8spd cassette perfectly?

No it won't be perfect, you can get it to work but it'll rattle in some gears...

I remember going through all of this when everyone went from 7 to 8 speed- having the same questions etc, the difference being to 8 speed you had to change the freehub body on the wheels...Trust me that T shirt got used for washing bikes long ago...

trying to make it work will turn your 8speed bike into a 3speed bike.

but go ahead, knock yourself out.

it won't work for all the reasons already mentioned.

Not sure how many people need to say it but it won't work.

shifters and cassettes are slaved.

Second (or third) Tnt. It does work - I have done it, but it is a pain in the ass. The problem is in getting (and keeping) perfect cable tension. If it (sti) clicks into 9 then things go haywire.

Bought a 9 speed cluster.

no it dos not work.

if it is clicky claking then your gears are not working. Therefore an 8speed shifter on a 9 speed cassette does not work.

The horse is dead, stop thrashing it. get 9speed shifters with a 9speed cassette

i have done it. discovered one evening before magalies monster that i had a broken spoke, so put the rigid's wheel on the hardtail. rigid had one less gear than hardtail. phoned a friend to explain to me over the telephone how to set the limiter screws and some other adjustments, and finished the magalies with that wheel - if it happened, it must be possible.

YES it will work some of the time

NO it wont work well

YES you will wear out your cassette and chain faster

YES you will have endless shifting problems

NO it isn't worth the time and energy involved unless you REALLY enjoy setting your gears on friday night. The money you save, you will spend on a new chain and cassette to replace your now buggered drivetrain, and you will buy 9 speed stuff anyway. Unless you are a masochist, then please buy another 8 speed cassette and repeat process until throughly convinced it was a bad idea from the beginning.
