My idea of a "light" wheelset:

Hope Pro II's

Mavic 819 rims. I know they're a bit heavy, but they should be strong, and they're tubeless so you don't need to mess around with rim strips.

DT Swiss Revolution Spokes for the front, Competitions for the rear.

Pro-lock nipples.

Hope skewers.

Comes in at ~R3500 on CRC.

Yes: A2Z Hubs, ZTR Olympic Rims, DT Revolution Spokes

Yes for blue as well. I had a blue CK wheelset and it looked great right up untill the point I sold it

No: Alu nips. They just don't last as long as brass and when they go THEY GO. Not much of a weight saving and too risky. IMO.

Make sure, blue bits will go with your black frame.

If you do decide to go with Hope hubs make it ProIII's. Lighter, faster, smoother.

Why are the Pro III hubs smoother than Pro II's? Different internals?

Also, from what I understand, the straight pull wheels (Pro III hubs) come with 85kg weight restrictions. Are SP wheels not as strong? I know they are lighter.

I thought the Pro III is a non-disc hub?

As hub only, yes. But Pro III's are available as wheelsets with Hope's patented rotor mount thingy mijick on some of them.

XC3 wheels have a 85k weight limit, but heavier duty XC and AM wheelset is available.

If you start worrying about 2 much blue. HERE IS a great

set up. 1) DT SWISS xr 420d rims (white)OR new 400 even better. 2) DT swiss revalution spokes black.3) any DT nipples blue if you want. DT SWISS 240s hubs.(that pur of the ratchet is amazing and fellas tend to give way on single track with that purr behind them.4) your blue KCNC skewers. 5) your blue or Avid g3 rotors. This will not be the lightest but will come in around 1.5 to 1.6 kg and is best comprimise between xc light and durability. PLUS and this is BIGGEST plus you will still have some blue and as is almost always the case.(MOST components from same MANUFACTURER equal more reliable ride as they are designed to work together.)THIS will cost about 6 to 6500 at crc. LAST but not least if you want light value for money go DT SWISS XR 1450 rims silver blade spokes.and save up or put blue hope skewers on.R+- 7200

white rims are going to be so out of vogue in 6 months time.......

for interest sake I built up a 'expensive for my budget, semi dream wheelset last year'

ZTR Olympic rims (black)

DT Super Comp spokes (black)

Alloy 1.8mm nipples (red)

Hope pro II hubs and skewers (black)

they weigh 1525g iirc and thats with the rim tape and valves so completely tubeless set up.

I know I will be hacked into pieces for this but go the CRC route.

Like mentioned the whole setup will work out to R4000. Then add tax and you will have R1500 to spare.

Wheels localy is just to expensive

My wheels:

Dt Swiss xr4.2d(white)

Dt Swiss rev spokes

Dt Swiss brass nipples

Hope II blue hubs

From CRC: R3280

The best local quote was R6790

I like the all black route with the red nipples basically look like Shimano XT's without the silver strips on the rim
