It seems the vote is not in yet, many varied reviews on this.

Hope vs I9 vs Chris King?

Seems they all same quality, reliability, very similar engagement and same(ish) price range.

Anyone have personal experience on these?

DT 240S

I am running 240's at the moment on 4.2 and 4.3 rims' date=' would like to get something with through-axle and stronger.

So rather than rebuild current rims, move them to my XC build and get something nice and strong for the AM trails.

Hope is cheapest by far. I9 and CK are flip expensive

This is true - but I might be able to swing a deal  Wink

1. You do get ProIII Disc in complete wheelsets

2. Hope is arguably the best value for money, but of the three mentioned their pick-up (engagement is slowest). Okay for XC or marathon or trail, but for AM and more technical stuff you would want a hub that engage the moment you step on the pedal.

To give you an idea on price: you can buy a complete wheelset spinning on Hope hubs for the price of CK hubs only.

3. I9 vs CK:

Unfortunately I9 is only available as complete wheelset so its difficult to compare hub only prices. As far as complete wheelsets go they are very similiar in price. I believe I9 builds a lighter complete AM / Enduro wheelset than you will be able to with CK...and of course still have a wheel that'll last.

As with Hope, I9 hubs are adaptable and doing so takes minutes. They are easy to service and runs smooth and fast.

Engagement is quicker than CK.

CK has longer warranty, but it seems like I9's have proven themselves to be durable and long-lasting.

Both have a killer sound. Not as wild as Halo or Hope, but enough to let traffic know you are on your way.

Only downside with I9 hub is you can only use I9 spokes. This means you will always have to replace your wheelsets rim with the same rim or one with the same ERD. This is not a major issue as they use Stans, DT or their own high quality rims in builds.

DT240 are cool, but they older ones are not adaptable. They do not engage as instant as I9 or as fast as CK's. They sound like nothing. Bleh.

Quality is DT's normal high standard

They are limited to XC / Light Trail. The Crow2009-12-09 00:58:52

Did I9 not start making hubs a year or two ago? I most definitely read that they had so did that change?

Have heard mention that I9s are heavy on bearings, so would buying Kings with their servicable bearings not have an edge over I9 hubs, assuming I9 have started offering hubs for sale?

Personally, I don't think Hopes are quite in the same league. Definitely agreed that they offer the best value for money, but i.t.o. their freewheel construction they don't have the engagement advantage or reputation for reliability that I9 and King's drive mechanisms have gathered. Have heard of quite a few failures on Hopes over the years.

Sorry yes, but not available locally. My I9 wheelset has been going since I bought the Ibis and all they've ever needed was some minor TLC to keep them spinning. Other I9 owners I've spoken have all said the same.

Haven't heard of bearing issues.

I agree with you on Hope. I still think they are good value for money, but not in the same league as I9 or CK.

Of all the choices you mention, the Chris King hubs are superior. All the others use standard cartridge bearings which are expensive to replace (R80 or so each and up to four in a rear hub) and, they don't last very long.

Chris King uses a proprietary bearing (I have no idea what they cost) but, they are serviceable and angular contact. I won't be surprised if you can get a wheel's lifetime of use out of a single set, provided that you service them properly and often.
