Bicycle touring

Hi there hubbers

Me and a friend will be setting off on a bike tour on the 26th of December. I would like to know from you a few do's and dont's if possible.

Like do you do it with rigid bikes or hardtails(probably depend on terrain covered).we will be doing mostly open tar and farm roads...

which panniers do we use?are we allowed to ride on national roads?like the n2?

And then I'd like to know if anyone has some cheap bike parts for sale or to spare, starting to put together a bike for another trip later...

Thanks smiley1.gif

hey pikkie

i've toured some with rigid (form joburg to capetown, and from amsterdam to paris), and some with hardtail (from capetown to agulhas, through baviaanskloof, and around ireland)

i prefer the rigid, but just because it's got holes to properly fit the pannier racks. the hardtail doesn't have those, and the rack came loose on a downhill in baviaans.

which panniers? any that you can get hold of - they not that easy to get your hands on in south africa. i never needed front panniers. take a handlebar-bag - for the map as well - and a small backpack for things that you really don't want to loose.

why do on national roads? chances are there will be far more interesting routes?

people are incredibly friendly towards bicycle tourists ... i've been invited to sleep in peoples houses, join their spitbraai-party, pitch my tent in the back garden

wow ... i think it's time i get that atlas out again

where you going???

I had Karrimor panniers before they got 'redistributed' - needing to kit up again since planning some touring next year myself. I got then from Evans in the UK (from the store in Wandworth), and a handlebar bag and neat backpack that clipped on to the rack, but dont see those on their on-line shop. Never seen anything for touring in bike shops in SA.

I see our fav CRC carries the Topeak range?

My Cannodale F500 with headshock has holes for a rack at the back of the frame, but I have seen other tourers with front racks as well, keeping all the weight low helps the C of G and a stable ride I guess. but I am going with this bike.
