which flat pedals are good? the missus have some steel and plastic pedals, those with the teeth that eat your flesh out of your leg when you fall etc.

but she does not like these big pedals like the mongoose types

dont waste time with flats' date=' get her on to cleats![/quote']

One of the main things you need out of a pedal is grip - you want to stay on the bike.

The pins on this pedal are short and so the pedal may be quite slippery. The pedals that have teeth that eat your flesh out have VERY good grip but may be too much for what you want. (Grip is also linked to the shoes you wear)

Tthe most secure pedals will be those with cleats.

The type of riding they'll be used with is probably the most important factor in the decision. The more casual/recreational the riding, the more you can choose any pedal that takes your fantasy

she mainly does groenkloof. will later on do races etc but she only does mountain biking because i do it .... LOL must i leave the "eating" pedals a bit more or maybe get her some other or try to suggest cleats

Most flatties love the taste of flesh and normally claim their pound when things go wrong. The pedals need the lugs to bite into your shoe, so perhaps consider getting her a set of shin pads instead. Check out CRC and try tag onto an order to save on shipping costs. The Wellgo V8 copy is quite affordable and does the job well. Shin pads are also reasonably priced, with loads of options/styles available.

Personally I love flatties, I devolved back to flatties and don't see myself clipping in except for the odd race . Cleats are great if you're doing long XC rides. Flatties will defnitely give you the freedom to learn more.

please for your sake DO NOT BUY 50/50 pedals... they are THE worst flats.. When i got mine they were amazing at first but literally after like 7 or 8 rides they started falling apart.. seriously you will be very dissapointed... I have heard of more then 50 cases of people who have had exactly the same problem

A few options to look at of which are available on chainreaction:

dmr v8 or v12 if you can afford.. The trusted choice simple yet effective and decently priced

easton flatboy (rated the best flat pedal ever by mbuk) most durable

Funn soljam - very nice pedals and come in orange ;)

Ha! We meet again! My fiance had some el-cheapo plastic pedals. Get her to use those and spend some real money on proper cleats when the time is right. They, the el cheapo's,  don't eat shins like the ones with the metal spikes. She changed to cleats after a couple of sessions on relatively tame grounds like NF. Nothing to change your mind about cleats like bouncing off the pedals on that long downhill section with all the "graspolle". When we fitted the cleats to her bike she did a couple of practice runs in a park with thick Newlands like grass to soften the lie downs. She's on cleats now and does not miss the flatties at all.

I've also read fairly poor reviews of the 50/50's. I'm currently riding the DMR V8's (I like them but they are the 1st set of flats I've had) and the GF has the Wellgo V8 Copy (they were R110 off CRC) which have shredded her legs smiley36.gif She has however learnt to track stand and a bunch of other basics which can be daunting to learn with your feet clipped in.

get her the Shimano pedals that are "bear traps" on the one side and clipless on the other. That way she can learn to use it when it is safe.

what is bear traps mampara ... Confused
