Ha! We meet again! My fiance had some el-cheapo plastic pedals. Get her to use those and spend some real money on proper cleats when the time is right. They' date=' the el cheapo's,  don't eat shins like the ones with the metal spikes. She changed to cleats after a couple of sessions on relatively tame grounds like NF. Nothing to change your mind about cleats like bouncing off the pedals on that long downhill section with all the "graspolle". When we fitted the cleats to her bike she did a couple of practice runs in a park with thick Newlands like grass to soften the lie downs. She's on cleats now and does not miss the flatties at all.[/quote']

we do meet indeed again. i will try to convince her to maybe get cleats but highly doubt it at this stage. she has some el cheapo's ...those with the plastic platform and steel outerlining ... how long after your fiance started doing mtb did she convert to cleats?

My wife rides with these and started with trainers graduating quickly to clips....she will never ride with trainers again but these pedals are brilliant I think they are M647

I Think it was about 6-7 months. The first time she really used it was at the bottom of a steep hill. She pedalled like a mofo to get to the top because she was afraid to stop and do a potential lie down. She was dead tired when she reached the top of the hill. It was the end of the ride. LOL She has gotten way better since. She was second overall in her age group with the FPC series.

For XC riding, cleats are the best.

mrs mountain_lion also did not want to go for cleats immediately, so I got her a pair of Shimano PD-M545 pedals.

These have a cage around the clip, so you can use it with and withoiut cleats. You can even unclip and still have your foot on the pedal if you really want.

Nice description of it here.

Mrs mountain_lion fitted cleats soon after getting these and now she will not ride without cleats.

Just upgraded the crank set and fitted new normal cleat pedals for her, so the old pedals are for sale. Used, but still in good working condition.

See my post in the classifieds.

The PDM 324's are great - I got me a pair a few weeks ago to ease the learning curve to cleats. They are incredibly well made compared to some of the other Shimano's and no-names I own. I reckon the PDM 545's are probably on par and you wont regret them.
