I have two 305's.

The first never had any problems at all while the second started switching off on rides. Garmin replaced the unit and voila - no more hassles.

I assume the unit was under guarantee and they replaced it, however when its out of guarantee they tell you all you need to do is update the units firmware. Sounds like BS from Garmin and they know there is a problem.

My Garmin edge 305 also has something wrong with it.

It works for a while untill i need to charge it up again. It says its charging but once its finished charging i try to swich it on but nothing goes on. After about 12 hours I try swich it on again and it goes on for like a second so i charge it up and it works!!! When its back on low again and i need to charge it the whole cycle happens again. Really gets on my nerves.

The charging issue is not so different from the switching off problem. The contact board which makes contact with the contacts are attached to the charging plug. I assume that when you insert the charger ( which can go in very tight ) that the board moves slightly and loses contact for that split second. This will cause it not to charge, ebven though it shows charging. If you finished charging the unit, and it wont switch on , a soft reset will work, Hold in reset and mode and power. On the second attempt the unit will switch on , but then you probably have to charge it again. I also found that for some odd reason, this will happen a lot more frequently when you charge it on your pc , or leave it plugged in for long periods after downloading.

Please dont get me started again!  This is nothing more than a bad design and garmin not having the balls to fess up for making such a mess.

You can update firmware as many time as you like, it wont fix the connection between the battery and board!

Suggest you go with the firmware option first, It fixed mine.

My biggest issue has been the mounts that regularly need to be replaced - keep mine in my back pocket now.

But wouldn't want any other cycling computer!!

I'm also on my third 305. Phoned Garmin yesterday. My unit out of warranty - they offered to upgrade me to a 705 for about R2400, which seems like a reasonable deal. All my buddies are extremely happy with their 705's.

This is a known issue and Garmin replaces the units without cost whether in or out of warranty (as long as the unit is in good condition). I had my first unit replaced after the warranty expired and the second one started to switch off after more than 1 year from replacement. Garmin would also replace this one with a new 305 for free, however they also offered the option to take the Edge500 for free or an upgrade to the 705 for R1300 or so, as they assured me a new 305 may have the same issue. I upgraded to the 705.

Not my dealings with Avnic in Randburg, when it 1st started playing up i took my unit to them they claimed not to know of the problem but said a firmware upgrade will sort it out, which it did not. Took it a 2nd time (unit still under warranty) they still claimed not to know of the problem even though the problem was being discussed on chat forums including Garmins own, they cleared the memory and gave it back, still faulty,Thereafter i only used it on my indoor trainer. Took it back a 3rd time (out of warranty) and they said they would allow me to swop for another 305 at a cost of R800 or i can upgarde to 705 for R1800.

Strange that there is inconsistency from Avnic. My experience, on both occasions, was excellent. The first unit was swapped out just after warranty lapsed (14 months or so) and I received the 705 on Monday this week. The only thing I was a little dissapointed about was the 1 week replacement time, otherwise perfect service. they merely did a quick test on the spot and produced the paperwork immediately.... Oh, and I do not work for Garmin or Avnic, just in case there is any doubt....
