HI guys

Got this fork new a while back and now it is not extending back after riding all the way to 100mm.

Is there something wrong, maybe a service/clean is needed ?

I thought it might be the - air being more than 15psi higher than the + air, but I've adjusted the pressure and doesn't seem to help.

Any help would be nice !

Thanks,

WW.

Have it serviced,

The seal between + and - air chamber may be worn causing over charging the negative chamber

But ultimately have it serviced by a pro who can figure out what is wrong it is an internal error so fix it before something else actually does break

Thanks for the info, heck I only got it new in november/december and haven't ridden much. can't think it already needs a service ?

How long does such a seal last ?

I guess that it would not be covered under the warranty ?

Thanks, WW.

Most likely under warranty, if it is only 3 months old as you say, sometimes it may have been damaged at the factory or may have just been a dud

Have your local bike shop contact the rock shox ditributor and hear what they have to say

How long does a seal last?

It is difficult to say but understanding what type of seals are inside forks, helps to understand the problem.

On Rox fork, the external seal you see is a wiper seal. It fails from wear, by griding down as it moves up and down a dirty stancion. It also fails from perishing, I suspect due to UV exposure.

All internal seals on Rox's are O-rings. These usually fail from hardening through a combination of time and permament compression. They move up and down very smooth shafts in clean oil and thus don't abrade like wiper seals. However, from the constand compression, they develop flat spots and thus lose their seal.

In air forks they have to work hard, sliding up and down on those shafts, but also do so with high air pressure behind them.

I suspect your fork's seals are flattened.

This doesn't help you though. They are cheap - very cheap parts, but getting to them is a little time-consuming and messy and hence, expensive. If you can get a free seal replacement out of the distributor, do so. If not, bite the bullet and find someone that will replace only the O-rings in the left leg for you.

Just a thought but why not have a go at it yourself, RS forks are very simple. Its a very rewarding process. All manuals are available from the Sram site and you can pick up all the parts from your LBS.
