I have a 2007 Mongoose Meteore Comp frame that I'm busy building up.  I have the original headset, but I'm not sure if I'm missing some parts.

Does the top bearing use the frame as it's bearing "cup"?  The lower bearing has the fork race, the bearing itself, and then the cup which fits up into the frame.

For the top assembly I only have the centring sleeve (the ring with the slit in it), the bearing, and a green plastic seal.  Am I missing the cup part that rests in the frame, or does the bearing simply drop into the frame and sit on the angled chafer in the frame? Confused

But the bearing doesn't sit snugly in the headtube, and when the top tall spacer goes on top, it doesn't even touch the bearing assembly, it sits directly on the headtube smiley5.gif

The bottom bearing assembly is all housed in a cup assembly, and fits snugly, the top bearing assembly is basically just a bearing cage, and a ring that fits into the cage.

Bottom bearing on left, the 3 remaining parts (4 including the spare) are meant to be the top bearing assembly...

I bought the frame and these are all the parts that I got given.

You have a combination there of one catridge bearing and one loose-ball bearing. All the headsets I know use either a cartridge bearing or a loose bearing, but not one of each.

Further, there is no way that that loose bearing retainer fits directly onto a frame part. These is something missing. Show us pics of the frame. My guess is that you need two of the one one the left.

Yeah that's what I thought too. I'm assuming the top assembly is similar to the bottom one but just a slightly different size. The top of the headtube looks exactly like the bottom, just slightly smaller diameter (hence the bottom bearing not fitting in the top properly), but with the same angled lips etc.

I'll post a pic later tonight when I get home.

I've done some googling and the specs for the 2007 Meteore Comp all say FSA IS-2 headset, which I think is meant to look something like this:
