I have been looking forward to the offroad triathlons that always occur in the beginning of the year.

The sasol cross triathlon is a lot of fun and costs R120 for a late entry.

However, I was keen to try the XTerra triathlon this weekend at Buffelspoort only to discover that the price is R230 for a late entry! WTF!

This is exorbitant for a small triathlon (Swim - 400 m, Bike - 12 km, Run - 5 km).

Think I will stick to the Sasol events.

Xterra is a rip off, early or late entry. Ever since Nissan pulled out it's got very expensive, maybe it's because all the tri geeks have got mtbs now and they will pay double the value for anything without batting an eyelid. maybe they get prices quoted in US$ as it is supposed to be an international event.

case in point:

xterra knysna-2007 R60

xterra knysna 2009 R260

but don't bother telling stillwater, they won't get back to you. the numbers are up so who cares?

I couldn't be bothered anymore because they cocked up a lot of things at grabouw last year.

just like every year, they blatantly lied about being able to late register, and forced people to drive to somerset west for mandatory registration. i've got a friend who was flying in from durbs on the friday, they told him he couldn't race if he wasn't personally at registration(the dumbass believed them and they kept his money)

waterstop 3km from the finish of a 25km route, on a downhill (so both lite and full courses would share it)

couldn't even mark the course properly and the winner got lost.

but otherwise enjoy, there might be some very serious racing at the front (go have a look at conrad stoltz' pink zipps right now!)

Doing my second X tri this w/e, my only question is how do u get to Buffelspoort Dam? I know it is close to where Magalies Monster starts but I always get lost on the way there

I agree it is a massive ripoff!

Anyways, here are directions...

Go through tunnel at Harties, continue over 4way stop, past Mooinooi turnoff, turn left at Buffelspoort sign.

The local series is a total independent series from the international one.  The Grabouw leg is the championships for XTERRA SA- winners go to the world champs in Hawaii.

Now I have to ask... if it's such a *** event why is the numbers rising each year?

Im training for Grabou at the moment, It is bloody expensive, I did the lite last year and Im planing on the full this year, dont even want to know what that costs, and Im already a "late entry" and the event is still 3 weeks away, how stupid!! I wish they didnt include the t-shirt, cause thats definately built into the price, and duesouth probably even puts a markup on.

Having said that I thought is was a great event apart from the Tape which sent the leader on the wrong course, great pitty for him. And Ive never allowed waterpoints make up a great race or not for me, Unless maybe a 100km race.

I booked one of the houses from forrestry on the other side of the lake, so we will be 20 odd and Its going to be a great time. I roped about 10 newbies into doing their first one.

@Napalm, There is not a lot of events around so beggars cant be choosers. There is only 2 I think in Gauteng, Xtterra and Sasol. Agree with Boss, ditch the T-Shirt and even the medal or give us a choice and if we want shirts and medals then we pay extra. At the Sasol one the T-shirts were Nursery School Yellow (U know the type they give the ankle biters so that if they get lost you can spot them easy)....my gardner didnt even want it.

I think the biggest reason for the early late entries is to discourage people from waiting until the last minute. It's a moerse thing to organise such an event, and to suddenly cater to dozens of extra people at the last minute is a bit of a logistical nightmare

Well I only just got back into training so Im leaving my options open for the full or the Lite. That swim Is a lot further..

So I will have to fork out the extra cash

@Bos and Justin: Do I need serious trail shoes for the Xterra?

If you are going to be doing lots of mountainrunning, proper trail running, then Yes, If youre going to do one Xterra light then no the trail gets technical but not for one event and for dirtroads, you dont need trailshoes.

You cant use these trail shoes for normal road running, the soles are to hard and they will skrew up your shins/joints. The only thing they do better is support the ancle and they have slightly better grip.
