what would i have to spend to upgrade properly??

I've got a 2009 Rock Shox Reba SL with remote lockout for R3800. Awesome fork!

Will post pics tomorrow and can email them to you if interested

I suggest you look on CRC and contact Kiwi. Bide your time for a special offer, your upgrade is not urgent. Any one of the solo air forks will be a nice upgrade. A worthwhile jump will be to 32mm aluminium stanchions, aluminium steerer and compression damping with lockout.

All forks come with rebound damping but you can only get lockout if the fork has compression damping. It doesn't have to be remote damping, a dial on the fork crown is fine.

Dont forget to check with Kiwi what he has for you in an RST brand fork, they offer good value for money.

Yeah Kiwi is the man - either that or you gotta go previously owned. take the 2k, sell the dart add a bit and you there...

Also hubbers get confused with the whole fork/shock/front/rear thing...causes some epic popcorn threads. So to ease the pain - forks are on the front, shocks are on the rear. Happy buying!

Hi Tyerone I would say budget on 3500-4000 to upgrade properly then you will have a very nice fork

I saw a new Reba race at solomans in woodmead today for 3999 and a reba team for 4999 i dont know if thats negotiable i just picked them up to compare the weight to some other shocks they had there

heres a nice CRC deal on a reba team but you would have to check what length its steerer is cut to

postage would be free

My fiance got stuck with a dart 2 on her merida. She weighs abouth 50kg so it was like riding a rigid (even with the softest spring installed in the dart!)

So I decided to upgrade my shock and then put my "old" shock on her bike. So she ended up wit a Fox F32 80mm (air shock) on her bike.

The dart 2 weighs in at 2.58kg!!! The fox is 1.59kg!!! The weight saving is almost 1kg!!! My fiance will now have BETTER STEERING RESPONSE and GREATER RIDE COMFORT!!!

Hi JB

Can you give a quick explanation as to why only a fork with a compression damper will lockout compared to a fork with just rebound that won't lockout. I think thats what you are explaining here.

Sure Ken

Technically, the manufacturers of a fork can make the fork lock out any way they want. They could have a mechanical device in there that physically engages, much like a door lock. I believe such a fork does exist in the exotica somewhere - Lefty?

However, most manufacturers have chosen to do lockout hydraulically. They've done this by allowing the compression damper port to close up, preventing fluid from moving past the compression damper. In effect, this setting is just an extreme setting of compression damping. This has the advantage that there is no mechanical noises, no specific engagement point, no play (with clack clack noises) etc etc.

If you look at Rox' execution of this, they've made a rotating shutter valve in the "Moton Control Damper" (compressoin damper in English) that closes a hole, preventing the oil to be pushed up from the compression rod, to enter the top part of the fork.

Manitou, Fox and Marzocchi have taken a different approach. They have a needle valve that closes up.

If you look at the way the lockout engages, you'll see it is the extreme closed setting of the comrpession damper dial, whether it actuates by cable or other means.

The fact that you're stopping the fork from compressing by preventing fluid to move around inside, means that the lockout isn't rock-solid. It always has a little give.

Some forks have low and high-speed compression damping and here it gets a bit trickier. If the low-speed damping is open, then you can slowly compress the fork even when it is locked out. If effect this means that if you are riding a long continuous berm, the bike will slowly sag.

The reason lockout is never on the rebound damping mechanism is that such an arrangement will also stop bob, but the fork will slowly squat down to its lowest point and then lock out there. We don't want that, hence lockout on the compression circuit.

The compression and rebound circuits are totally independent, by the way, even though they both wallow in the same pool of oil.

I hope this doesn't mean that she thinks she can start ramming down more pies now!
