Neck pain while riding

Recommended Posts

When I ride my neck gets sore , I have been for a fitting and at the fitting the guy who did the fitting turned my stem upside down so I was in an even more race orientated postion . This made it even worse. I changed the stem back to the right way up and it was better but still not confortable.

The question is do i change the handle bars or the stem to put me in a slightly more upright postion.

the stem I have at the moment is a FSA OS-XT 6?

The handle bars are FSA XC 180OS Flat 620

I used to have the same problem, sorted it out by using some riser bars and a shorter stem, went from 120 to 90mm.

I take it you're a beginner, at least to the road. I only started riding last season, my first long race was 99er - 121km. My neck was k@k sore, along with my back etc. Bottom line is if you ride enuf you muscles will get used to the stress and the pain should dissappear. I never get a sore neck anymore. In fact of all the pain I went through in the Double Century I dont remember any pain in my neck. If you've been for a bike setup...you're good...just keep riding.

Hi there , I had exactly the same problem what the lbs did to resolve this was they had to put in a wider handlebar as my shoulders a wider than the 38cm bar I had on and they put on a shorter stem 80 or 90 mm stem , and this resolved my issue , actually felt like a new bike and I had much more control over the bike especially the climbs.

If you've been for a bike setup and your stem is too long and the guy doing the setup hasn't picked it up...then you seriously need to consider where you go for you bike setups.

You would think that at a 650 rand fitting the people would tell you these things, I ride for 6 hours a week and have been doing so for 6 months so I spend a fair amount of time on the bike.

I had a flexablitly check when I went for the fitting and I was told that I have great flexability (but then again I think the fitting was a waste of money)I am going to get riser bars to start then check out the stem.

Now the question is which bars to get? I am not talking brand I am talking length, backsweep and upsweep specs.

As mentioned I am running FSA XC 180OS Flat 620 at the moment and do not want to chage the XC nature of my bike too much.

Suggestions?

Some of my riding partners were a pain in the neck, so I stopped riding with them, now I dont have a pain in my neck anymore.

Ill take the bust, thanks very much.

On another note.  I found that getting advice about what bars to get to help out with the pain problems is a waste of time as each person has a different reason for the pain.  What works for one doesnt necessarily work for another.  I ended up trying a few on loan from my LBS and from friends until i found one that worked for me

Ask your girlfriend or wife, which ever to get off you neck. The pain will subside... smiley36.gif

Do some upper body exercise to strengthen you shoulders and neck area.
