Hard tail or full suspension?

Ok, here is what I've decided to do ....

Firstly, my weekday and weekend needs vary. During the week I'd like to commute to work, which will be a combination of road and offroad sections. Unfortunately I cannot do the whole commute on a road bike, but large sections will be on road. Here the main purpose is getting to work and back in the most efficient way. Then on weekends I want to head onto some proper tracks though. This indicates to me that I really do need 2 differently purposed bikes (well, that's my excuse and I'm going to stick to it).

For the commuting I am going to get a 29-er hard tail. Nothing too expensive. Just a getting-to-work-bike. I think the 29 inch wheels will be well suited to commuting. For all the other rides I will get a full suspension standard 26inch-er. This is where I will spend a bit more - but only a month or two after getting the HT.

Sound reasonable? I think so.

Get a proper 29er HT and you will not need a dual suspension.

This is what I have in mind for the 29-er. For the dual susp I have no idea yet. Will get that once in CT.

Nice Bike. Have a look at the On-One Scandals that Kiwi sells as well. Excellent value. http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.za

Do all your riding on that before you plunge into a dual suspension. You might just find you don't anything more.

I have gone through 26er HT to 26er DS back to 26er HT and am now waiting to build my 29er HT.

My test ride on a 29er did not see me go down a hill but the little bit I did do made me believe that it will definitly be a smoother ride than a 26 HT . But what worries me is that I have never seen a 29"HT on a downhill course . Could that possibly mean something ?

Fortunately I don't see myself becoming a downhill rider soon (from my limited understanding of what the term "downhill riding" means). My technical skill have some way to go yet. Of course, I have never "tasted" downhill riding, and as it is with many things, once you taste it ....

But regardless, the said purpose for this bike was commuting, and the full susp was for "other" rides, so let's keep the apples with the apples Smile

Ouch, I can feel your feistyness through the tendons of the world wide web.

I assume at this point I interpreted the term "downhill course" in your first post incorrectly. Like I said in my disclaimer, I am not *yet* fully familiar with the exact meaning of all the lingo (and welcome the education).

I understood "downhill course" or "downhill riding" to be something very very different to, say, riding on a track or trail which included some downhills. For the former, you wear big helmets that look like motorbike helmets, and wear padding and stuff. And for the latter, well, that's just "normal" mountain bike kit. I don't see myself doing the former, but never meant I will not encounter downhills, even semi-serious ones.

I assumed therefore you meant you never saw a 29-er on a downhill course (the motorbike helmet type of stuff). If you never saw a 29-er on A downhill (any downhill), now that is something different altogether. Fortunately I don't think there are monster downhills to work and back. And as for the "other" downhills, I am glad I kept my options open for a full suspension then.
