The issue for me is that the Hub is potentially the place a youngster could come and get advise and info on cycling. If the language is fowl' date=' the youngsters parents will not want/allow him or her to visit the site.

If someone gets so irate they have to swear, maybe that should be PM'd.

Ok so the youngsters parents are going to ban him from going to school, or wach tv.?? How fowl are language in schools??

Agreed, but as a parent you try to reduce the amount of exposure to things foul. Its the same as having parental control on the TV.

If I remember correctly there is an age limit of 18 on this site.

The Hub could be that, but its not, and without a lot of moderation it wont be.

Seems to me that you dont get much activity here from the under 18s, tho itd be interesting to find out. A couple of folk younger than that have posted - Brighter Lights(?) but they tend to get chased off. Nellie is about the only one i can think of who survived (& Fire from time to time) but she's not under 18 now.

The Hub is us, and this is how we talk after taking account of the other people here. Its not often bad and when it is someone usually says so.

The people I have sent to the Hub for a look, have found that it is a bit of a boys club, where the old members share inside jokes and abuse the brands they don't like.

When you look at the number of people online( both guests and members) compared to the number of cyclists in SA and abroad that could log on...the numbers are not great. Is the language of the Hub, the boys club attitude or the lack of info sharing the reason?

I enjoy the Hub and the have gained plenty of info, but maybe the owners should look at the make up and content, and if they want to grow it make the necessary changes.

Just posting my thoughts...

If we're concerned about influencing youngsters' date=' I'm more worried about poor spelling, dodgy grammar and weakly constructed arguments than the effect of a choice expletive.[/quote']

Good point, I think they started it with the cell phone language, and we reply to our kids.... aaa the same way?

MPAA definition of PG13

A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category.

The theme of the motion picture by itself will not result in a rating greater than PG-13, although depictions of activities related to a mature theme may result in a restricted rating for the motion picture. Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating.

More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture?s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating.

More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous.

So here goes.

BigH, your opinion as always is valued. Pity you did not vote though. My breasts, and their taste have not got a whole helluva lot to do with you though,  but thank you for asking.

There are some witty chirps on this poll, which you all by now know is what I really appreciate.

I have one on the foulest mouths around - if you want I can get you references. My point is that there is a time and a place for everything. Perhaps this is not the place.

It seems I am wrong. There are a large number of Hubbers who do not have children and therefore do not appreciate what those of us who are parents try and do. Fair enough; there are different frames of reference.

Perhaps I should lower my standards? Has anyone got a shovel for me?

See? I find that funny. It is subtle. It is the in-your-face stuff that I think is inappropriate

Foul language is a part of everyday life and (certainly my) usage.

Personally abusive posts should not be tolerated' date=' and it is very easy to be unpleasant from behind the safety of a keyboard.

As for fowl language, well, you coots are clucking crazy!

Edited because one "safety of a" is quite adequate.[/quote']

What would be seen as abusive post???

The swearing on the Hub is not a problem. It is a very small minority and much less that what you will find in real life.

What is a problem though is how santimonious, hypocritical, pharisaic, goody-goody and false some Hubbers can be. Maybe being sanctimonious, hypocritical, pharisaic, goody-goodyand false should be outlawed in the Hub rules and swearing be allowed.

I have an absolute distaste in people trying to be what they really are not.
