  1. This is how I understand it...GPS uses 30 satellites in fixed orbits. In order to ascertain position you need to fix between 3 of these (triangualtion) The signal off a 4th satellite is used to solve for altitude. The priciple is fairly simple: the individual satelite transmits a timing signal. When this is picked up by the receiver, the time it took to get there is used to calculate distance from that satellite. Do this same calculation off another 3 satellites and the intersecting arcs of distance give you a reasonably precise position in 3 dimentions. JA-Q001 I had a similar question...
  2. Is comparing BigH to Bra Julius offensive...I think they both exist in the form we know them to annoy and antagonise. By responding you fall into the trap.
  3. I ran with someone who has started wearing them recently, and she loves them. She has suffered with knee problems for some time, but seems to be a bit better off with the fivefingers on. They do look odd, but then so do compression socks!
  4. When In jhb, I often go to the Boksburg branch and must say they have been helpful and informative.
  5. Cycling Major...it wasnt me! Funny thing about a public forum when people dont have pics of themselves is that we have no idea what race they are, I am or for that matter Cycling Major is. He may be coloured for all you know, making the racist angle a bit silly. How else do we describe people? As a non roadie, how would one suggest you learn to ride in a group or bunch? By the sounds of it there is not much sympathy towards new riders.
  6. Ryan Sandes, the best ultra trail runner in the world wears them for training, racing and recovery. I find that if I run hard in them, my recovery is quicker than without. My understanding is that there is scientific proof that they speed up recovery. There is a study being carried out at present from the Two Oceans Ultra and the use of compression gear, I will look for the info.
  7. Why do the manufacturers stipulate that it only applies to the original purchaser? Surely if the frame has a lifetime guarantee then it should not matter if it is the first or second owner. I think they rely on the fact that the bike will cvhange hands before it breaks and therefore the guarantee falls away. For me lifetime on the frame is lifetime, not 3months or 5years or until the bike changes hands.
  8. If the race is similar in distance and intensity to your training rides, then dont change too much from your normal prep for a long training ride. I think too many people place greater emphasis on race days and forget that you body has become used to your preparation. That might mean some additional carbs, but also some beers after work and some low carb food for dinner. While running Comrades it amazed me how many people had great long runs( traditionally done as your last long effort before Comrades)and then suffer on the big day. My reasons for this are that during the long run and lots of our training runs/rides, we have stops and wait for slwoer members. We might not have followed a rigid taper before the long run and not followed a rigid diet, but its what the body has been doing for 6months in training up to that point. Then comes the big day, and we change what we have been doing, we stop running, we eat different foods then on the day we start running and dont stop until we cant go on. All of this is different to the way we have trained. For me if you want to continue to lose weight, then dont stop riding completely, keep ticking it over, eat your normal diet, just have pasta and not pizza and look for an Energade type carbo loading drink to take the few days before. Not scientific and not from an A batch athlete, just my thoughts.
  9. If they are re running articles as per requests, then surely the mag would end up thicker...beacause your intrepid reporters have been scouring the trails and roads for the latest scoop and lightest gadget.
  10. Kevin Evans-Xterra Champ will confirm that running is good for cycling.
  11. I think its a South African thing. If you look at road running, people only think of you as a runner if you have done Comrades. If you are a great 10km runner and compete in your age group, you are not seen as being a real runner...The same applies to MTB, and road for that matter. I heard the discussion around the Amashova last weekend when people say they are doing the shorter one, the question is "Why". That is why stage races are becoming so popular...its hard core.
  12. I used it a few years back for my first marathon and they were great. Easy to chew and seemed to work. I have not seen them for a while.
  13. Beware the yellow fertility bangle!
  14. Bicycling mag sounds close to Runners World for content...bought the latest RW yesterday before boarding a flight to Jhb. Had read the mag before we started the descent...and no I did not board at Heathrow but Durbs.
