They're supposed to be waterproof, but they're not.

 

If you remove the sensor and pull off the rubber 'foot', you will see a small hole in the bottom of the sensor housing. Water gets into this hole and corrodes the circuit board.

 

You can fix the problem and make it properly waterproof by using some silicone sealant to plug the hole.

 

I've noticed that newer sensors come with this hole already plugged.

I've never had a problem with my cadence/speed sensor.

 

Whether the small hole that's been referred to in an earlier post is sealed or not, I couldn't say.
