Long ride for 16th June

Recommended Posts

MichelleH and SP, what's the avg speed.  Myself and a friend want to come along, but our longest ride up to now was 60km, so when we go over that, ISH, I'll need to know the AVG!

ewep, it will be somewhere slow enough for another friend of mine who's joining us and she is not very fit... her R4S was 4:50, H2H was 4:05, 94.7 was 4:39. if we need to go slower then we will do so. the birthday girl just wants to spend time with her bike! smileys/smiley2.gif

epoh - it's an annual fundraiser for SA guide-dogs association. we leave from TdF in Boksburg and head off to Bethal, then we go to Badplaas, then Nelspruit, then Middleburg and then back home smileys/smiley4.gif

OK, then I'm in, will quickly phone a friend (James) as well.  Who's gonna drive the backup vehicle, MichelleHs' hubby?  And is it a bakkie/car/TRUCK?

MichelleH, My usual route out that way is along Hendrik Potgieter, past Sterkfontein and up to Maropeng, turn left and you have a nice long downhill to the Magalies road, turn right and roll down the hill into the village.

Coming back you have two options, go through Magalies and round to the bottom of Hekpoort and then start the climb back home either going straight up Sterkfontein into Mogale (Krugersdorp) or back along HP.

The other way is back up to the Maropeng road but turn right this time and work you way back to Randfontein, past Uncle Harry's and back to Ondekkers. Both ways work out around the 120-140km range.

Sir Fed, sounds good, it's a deal!

ewep, we have a Nissan singlecab and a Subaru Outback (4 seater, AWD, etc). Not sure which one to take, probably the Nissan to store more bikes. We can also borrow a trailer that takes 4 up on the roof (bikes that is!)

You don't have much faith in many people finishing this do you, or is it one of those rides where everytime you stop you have to shoot a tequila (or something equally nasty) and the last person riding wins?

So far on this post alone I think more than 5 people have declared that they might need to use the sag wagon! Darn, I won't be serving tequila, but I still think the dropout rate will be bad!

Either that, or people are using sneaky tactics to downplay their fitness so they can outsprint the group to the top of the next hill and still brag that they're not actually in the best shape!! See other post on what we say and what we MEAN!!

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the aim of this is to enjoy a long ride at a pace that everyone is comfortable with and also to socialise and enjoy cycling.

The aim is not be the last one standing. If you want to race, then you should rather wait for the next race. If after 60km if everyone is tired then we pack up, no big deal.

I have been cycling now for 5 months now, but that doesnt mean I am in bad shape smileys/smiley17.gif So if you wanna go hard and fast Sir Fred, I will join you for that on another occasion, but this will be to enjoy the ride.

I am going to plan my training so that I take this ride as a recovery ride, nice and slow.

Slowpoke, you are going to get some decent miles in the legs with all that riding. You will feel the power in the legs a week or two after you have done it.

epoh, the plan is definitely just to have fun. I was joking about the abandon rate!

OK, where do people want to start from? Are we all agreed on West Rand?

Hey, my training program says 50km for Friday the 16th so I am looking for an easy social event, no racing. Anyone who has ridden with me before will know that I love nothing more than going back for the slower riders and giving them a tow back to the bunch.

When it's time to race, I will extend an open invite to join me on one of my long days (no ego intended here).

About 200km's at roughly 36km/h.

The balls in your court, let me know when you are ready. smileys/smiley2.gif (I can see I am going to take flak for this ... smileys/smiley18.gif)
