Cyclocross Posted May 13, 2010 Share Has anyone tried a rear wheel with quick release (rather than axel + bolts) in a frame w/horizontal dropouts? e.g track or ss. Will it hold?
SteveS Posted May 13, 2010 Share Go to http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.za/category.aspx?categoryID=228 and get two of of these babies. I have them on me 29er with horizontal dropouts with QR wheels
Johan Bornman Posted May 13, 2010 Share Steve's advice is good. A QR on its own, especially these poofter anodised things with open cams aren't strong enough to hold a wheel in a horizontal slot. You shouldn't even try. It'll just rip loose, pull the wheel skew and scuff the inside of your left chainstay. Most people don't realise but the biggest stress anywhere on a bike emanates from chain pull. In the bad old days we used to break axles from chain tension. Lately the engineers realised that an outboard bearing close to the left chainstay is what was needed all along.
