Has anybody here tried entering the Amashova online?

I noticed the page where you put in your credit card details does not seem secure??  The site doesn't begin with https or show a security certificate but when I contacted the organisers and the response I got was:

"To date we have 2000 online entries, and have not experienced any problems. Our site is secure, we use Iveri, Nedbank, which is a secure portal. I can email you our banking details if you would prefer to do a direct transfer."

Am I being paranoid??

I'm sure my thing came up with a secure site, then again, maybe not. Maybe I just expected it and didn't take not.

Now you are making me paranoid.

Rather just do a direct transfer then. Too late for me as I have already entered...

Stress, Stress, Stress!!! OK, I'm over it!! NOT !!!

Let me double check the site....

Do you guys even know what the difference between a http and a https connection is?

An https connection is one that is secured and encrypted by a security certificate (thawte, verisign, etc) usually using a industry approved encryption algorythm. This means that if someone is currently sniffing your data transfer when u click post they will just see garbled info. on a normal http connection the info will be posted as clear text.

in other words, theres FAR more chance that someone is going to steal your wallet Smile

Okay, so they can only view the data for that specific time that you post it and once it's gone through they cannot get hold of that data, or can they??

It's a bit worrying if they can cause then if they get your credit card details, well that is scary!! At least if your wallet is stolen you cancel your cards immediately, here you will only find out when you check your account or a large amount is used at once....

My hubby is a computer programmer etc, and he won't purchase anything over the net....then again, he does go a bit overboard when it comes to safety!!

Well it depends. Was the payment handled by a 3rd party, or did you just hand over your cc details to the amashova ppl. if you just handed your details over to the shova ppl, its a bit more worrying, because in theory they could use that info again and again.

If they use a 3rd party for payment collection then its not such an issue. I dont think any of the payment gateways in SA are allowed to store CC info. Also, they all have to be approved by the banks, and the banks are amazingly full of nonsense.

I've heard of people who refuse to use online banking as well... each to his own...

iveri is a payment gateway supplied by Nedbank for smaller type companies to do business online, so the shova site would not store your card details, goes straight to nedbank from where its secure further down the line.

There is however no encryption between ur pc and the shova webserver (i.e they dont serve the cart securely -- via SSL cert)

Im not missing the race coz they dont have a cert! I'll take my chances LOL
