I have discover an option that work:

Option:

50mm pill container (most vitamin pills and moducare ext use this size container)---No cost

Some rip cord ---you should have some of this at home

One switch----R5 max

Some curcuit connecters R20 at Midas or builder wharehouse

One x 20W downlight R5 - R68 depending on taste

two tie cords (you must have)

Length of double sided velcor R10

12V battery -R50 at Midas

Drill two holes in the base of the pill container (one for wire and one for switch

TRim a big hole carefully the top of the lid (you will use this to fix the downlight into the pill container)

Connect all the goodies.

Be careful of the pillboxes, should they not be strong enough you can get 'melt down'! Those lights, not the LED ones luckily, create quite a bit of heat. May be better with the LED ones.

That's pretty much what I have now with the smaller 38mm (I think) downlighters (not LED). Used some hobby type bottles but they melted. Now using stronger irrigation type fittings!

I have tested MAch 1 with a osram low heat halogen (which is a completely sealed unit. After half an hour (battery life) it was hot but not close to melting. I suppose a cheaper halogen would have melted it.

Another good reason to go LED.

Hi Graeme

As this point in time we don’t distribute through a distributor to keep costs down.

For down-lighters we are only focusing on the high powered LED technology, and therefore we have discontinued the through-hole 21 pc MR16 light sources.

Our existing MR16 3w has a similar intensity to a 20W halogen globe in the centre of the beam, however total illumination over a radius of 2 metre is about 1/3 of that of the 20W halogen. In other words the LED MR16 3w creates more of a spot light effect. (This solution is not dimmable) The cost of the MR16 3w is R150

We have recently developed a MR16 3x3w light sources using the latest Edison high powered LEDs which includes the fitting, and is dimmable via a RF controlled dimmer switch. This is more on a par to a halogen light source; and the cost is around R400.

Kind regards

tested a 3W LED downlight.

Findings:

On a 12V battery, same effect as about 9W bulb but lasts the whole night (over 4 hours with NO loss of light)

Titus, the initial test was as follows:

saterday: 3 hrs

sunday: 2hrs

monday: 3 hrs

and no loss of quality in the light.

ergo I am willing to beleive that the light should last for another 3 or so hours, giving me the 12 hours needed to "deur nag" on a 24hr ride without having to find batteries or recharge.
