I have recently upgraded to Dura-Ace 7800. Fantastic gruppo, especially for me who came from a Tiagra set-up.

But the chain is problematic. I have twice now experienced linking pins working loose. This morning it left met stranded as the whole chain came off.

I have taken great care in ensuring the pins are put back in the correct position. I am using a Rav-X chainbreaker.

It is the new dura-ace chain with the hollow pins. Can someone please give advice in case I am doing it wrong. Or are there a specific way to do it?

Thanks

Maybe use a 'quick link' or 'power link' instead? I have never had any issues with those and it makes drivetrain maintenance less of a hassle.

As far as I know you are supposed to put a replacement pin which you buys loose every time you break the chain. This is a solid pin with a guide section which you break off once you installed the pin. My orriginal 7900 chain came with a master link but Shimano replaced them all as there was a wear issue with them. You should not be breaking a road chain without a very good reason as they are not designed to do so in my opinion. If you do want to break them rather use a SRAM or other power link that will fit the chain if you want to remove the chain for cleaning.

SRAM powerlink works the best. Make sure it is the same speed as the chain 9 or 10.

Using a 9 speed powerling on a 10 speed chain will also cause problems.

Just buy a 10spd YBN quicklink from Planet-X bikes for R17 and you are sorted. Been using it on my Ultegra bike for quite a few thousand kilometers.
