Anyone tried or have any experiece with the continental Speed king.

Especially with tubeless.

I am looking for a tire (used tubeless with stans) that can withstand our harsh, rocky tire slashing and thorny south african trails.

Or mybe youve tried the Panaracer Razer XC tire (tubeless again) ?

Awesome tyres. I use the normal 2.1 Speedkings (non ust) as tubeless. Never had any problems. Very fast tyre but still very grippy.

I'm with Mud Dee - also use the normal 2.1's as tubeless.

I'm a very heavy rider' date=' and [TOUCH HUGE AMOUNT OF WOOD - THINK FOREST'] since I've had them on - about 6 months now - I've not had a moment's problems...

I also ride SpeedKings (tubed) and found the following:

Great grip in the dry & semi-wet.

Crap in mud & sad

Wear very quickly.

I've gone back to using Explorers as my training tires as I get more kilos out of them.

Uhm... actually - now that Buff mentions it' date=' they have worn out down pretty quickly...

But then the laws of physics - and my physique [LOL] - has seen me do that to most tyres I've had on.... Embarrassed

Explorers? Who makes/what again?

I test rode a conti speedking 2.3 on Sunday at Groot Marico on my front wheel. It was the tubeless version with Stans liquid inside. The reason why I was riding it was that my partner had complained about the tyres handling during Saturday's race. I wanted to see if the complaints were justified.

I did not like it as it felt slow on the open roads, the side knobs flex through the corners and I battled to hold the wheel on the line I wanted through the rocky sections. The conditions were soft sand, hard pack , plently of slate and some water.

The new conti speedkings are due very soon. I understand that there are some changes to the design and as I should be getting a set to test I can post a comparison later.

Find it very similar, but you get used to how far you can push it. It feels like it's going to go but it still seems to hold.

Would that be the one with the black chilli compound, or does the original one have that as well?

Do you use them in the front or both on front and rear ?

Im only thinking of putting them in the front.

Gonna look for a rear tire still. thinking about the panaracer razor xc as a rear.

Ahoy Captain,

1. New black chilli compound. I am getting the racing version at 400g per tyre.

2. Last 3 sets of tyres have been Larsen TT's, Killer Bees and Crossmarks.

The Killer Bees are the fastest and although they have minimal tread they are surprisingly grippy. They don't last long (back tyre lasted 6 months)and did not get tested in mud.

I FLY - your thoughts on the Crossmarks for general riding?

I have had the crossmarks on since May 07. In that time I have ridden Greytown Dirty Double, Induna, Walkerville, Tour de jozi, Akkedis Dirty Double and Groot Marico Dirty Double. The conditions have varied from hard pack, soft sand, rocks, river crossings, jeep track, thorns and lots of fantastic singletrack. Being in Gauteng we ( crossmarks and I) have not encountered mud yet.

I am fairly light (75kgs) and try to finesse the trials so a sharp handling tyre is important.

So far I am enjoying the crossmarks in that they are stable through the corners, have not had a sidewall cut (even at Groot Marico), roll smoothly on hard pack, the rocks have not cut any of the knobs and I have not experienced any wheelspin on any climb.

My partner, however, dislikes them as they throw up lots of sand and stones when she sits on my wheel.

I can second that on the crossmarks.

I have the crossmark UST and have not had one singal problem with them.

They handle in all kinds of terrain including mud.

They are all over very good tires and would recommend them for training and trail riding.

I am however looking to upgrade to a faster, lighter tire for racing and will keep the crossmarks for the training and other weekend rides as they are truly indestructable.
