Westdene Cycles (after discount)

2011

Alpine - R4150.00

Saturn - R5035.00

Phoenix - ?? Not sure why but the guy at Westdene couldn't give me a price but I know there is a 2011. Cyclefactory says the Phoenix 2011 is R6700.00 and Westdene gives 10% so that would be R6100.00 at Westdene. I can try confirm the price tomorrow with a different sales person.

Ventura - R7622.00

Spectra - R10080.00

(Last two way over my budget)

2010

Phoenix - R5368.00 (stock in medium not confirmed)

I was hoping to spend R4k - R5K, I guess I can stretch to 6K

I see you guys say I must go for the Saturn over the Alpine. Is it worth another R1100.00 for the 2011 Phoenix. Do I really need it? Or I guess I could get the 2010 for R300.00 more. Comparison between the 2010 and 2011 components wise and price? I am new to MTB so the specs don't make much sense to me yet.

Definitly, if you can afford it go with the phoenix she will keep you happier for longer than the Saturn.

I can see were this is going, next thing you will be talking me into the Silverback Surplus 1

No mate I had the 2010 phoenix all i could afford, and its an awesome bike to start off with.

Especially the 2011 model will serve you well. The old frame is 1.7kg, wanted to buy a morewood kwela frame, 1.5k and R6500 just for the frame. Ok i know geomitry differes etc etc. But the moral of the story is you get a hell of a lot for what you pay.

Wait save get the Ventura the fork is worth waiting/saving for plus decent crankset it may be a bit more than you want to spend but so worth it.

The first thing you will want to do with the others is change the fork and crank which will cost you best part of 4.5K

The fork maybe though suntour has grown leaps and bounds over the last year and if i remember correctly it now has the suntour air fork which is more than decent enough to start off with.

As for the cranks, deore cranks are 1037grams and an XT crankset is 853g not that much of a difference. On a beginner bike you wont even notice that difference.

But like all thing mtb the more you spend the better kit you get. And yes we all want the really cool stuff but most people have to start somewhere. And in my opinion its a good place to start.

Bike is good enough for some serious MTB, and its a great peace of kit to learn the trade.
