You have to train at the same intensity that you would like to race.If possible try to train with stronger riders it really helps.

"Go easy on the hard stuff" and "hard on the easy stuff" and the times will come. ;)

winning schwinning, I do races becuase i get real live moving obsticles. Makes it so much more fun than just going over that stationary rock sitting in my.

WHat i do is i start strong, get in front of the pack and then get into my pace. So you dont need to fight through the group later on. The first few km's are painfull but worth it.

Remember the rules - some already mentioned above:

1) Don't under estimate how good, fit and fast some guys are.

2) warm up (the older you get the longer it takes - mtb takes me 10km and road 30km just to get going properly - so warm up well before the event)

3) Be prepared to Go hard (but not so balls to the wall that you collapse after 5km - keep a check on your HR)

4) There will always be riders much stronger than you - be it generics, fitness, youth etc. - so don't stress.

5) There will always be riders much weaker than you - so don't stress.

6) see rule 1

7) Finally, relax, Its not about whether YOU win or YOU lose.......its about whether if I win or lose !

Solid advice thanks all. Glad to hear it was not just me! Was feeling a little down after the race but your comments have put it all in perspective again !!!!!

Starting off at the front normally starts quite sedate, give it 3-5 k's in and the pace picks up, from there the weaker ones get "broken away" intentionally and then normally it becomes survival of the fittest.

My advice, go out, enjoy yourself and remember why you are doing this sport in the first place.

My 2c - I've only once managed to stay with Buys and co from the gun and dammit I was killing myself think the avg was around 40kph if I'm not mistaken.

But after a few kays the pace did slow, although very hard none the less, I couldn't keep up and blew solidly at about 55km

Guess this is done to shake off wanabe racers like myself and get the contenders in a group from the start ?

Anyway I feel if you are able to hang with them till they slow a bit you might just make it the rest of the way...

I've given up starting that fast - even if I warm up, after standing around in the start pen I'm useless when the gun goes off and only start picking it up a bit later. Guess I'll have to work on that one then :)
