Killarney training is starting!

Join the PPA on Tuesdays at the Killarney Motorracing track for an hour's cycling training in traffic-free conditions.

Keep an eye on the PPA website and/or newsletter for any announcements regarding training sessions, as the track may not be available from time to time. It is envisaged that training will continue until early December, after which it will resume again in January and continue until March.

The training will be led by the PPA marshals, who'll get a few groups going - some slower, some faster. You simply slot in with the group you feel comfortable with, drop out when you need a rest, and jump in again when the next group comes around. The idea is that the groups will start off slowly and build up in speed as the evening progresses.

There will be medics on standby.

Registration starts at 17h30, and the track will be open from 18h00. Training will continue until 19h00 or until it gets too dark - whichever comes first. It is not necessary to book - just arrive with your bike. Parking is in the pit area - please don't leave any valuables in your car.

COSTS

PPA members will pay R15 per session; non-members pay R30. Children u/12 (but older than 6) are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent at all times.

* The Wednesday night racing sessions at Killarney still continue as well.

Anybody know if this is on for certain tonight?

Never done it before, would like to give it a bash.

I did this last year - it's a cool hour of riding... hopefully I'm not the only unfit one! And that there are enough riders for a slow group!

I'm always a little suspect when people talk of a slow group. Are we talking 25km/h or 35km/h?

I'm normally one of the knobs on knobblies so i just try stick it out as best I can, or until I lose the bunch. Think the most we did in the hour last year was about 33km/h, cos the first 30 mins is mostly a warm-up pace and then the guys speed up and do interval training. And the front group never catches the slow one.

I'm also going to be one of the knobs on knobblies.

Sounds like it won't be too fast then, will also try and hang on for as long as i can.

You'll do fine... I'm just an average hacker and I hang on mostly. (and if you do lose them, you just wait for the one bit where you can take a short cut across the slip road and rejoin around the corner.) :)

Did the Killarney training. Met Bikemonster there and we decided to give it a go in the "fast" group.

Managed to hang onto the group easily enough. Did just on 30km of riding in the limited time available. Most of the riding done was "warmup", a couple of rounds harder riding and then a couple of slower laps to cool down.

Enjoyed it, will be back for more.

Yeah, it's a cool ride without worrying about cars!! Unfortunately those of us with without road bikes can't keep up with the fast guys, especially when they suddenly take off like scalded cats when you're busy chatting at the back! :) I just rely on that old rule that I just made up "Riding alone into a gale is better for your fitness." ;)

So who's coming tonight?

Only been there twice. Never imagined they'd let cyclists onto the race track when a friend told me to join him. Really cool experience :)

Except I think I may be night blind. On the last lap for the day, I took the last corner that leads to the straight where one enters the track wide and went 15m off the road onto the sand

Wonder what was running through the head of the guy I overtook on that last uphill

Attention mitychondrion...you are no longer 15m off course...you are now 1500km off course.

Killarney is the racetrack in Cape Town.

Kyalami is the racetrack near Midrand.
