Do you get nailed on import duties if you buy a bike while on business in the UK and you want to bring it back to SA?

You will only need to pay import duties if you declare it when arriving at Joburg Airport. Personally I just walk through "Nothing to declare" with the bike in a bike bag. I have never been stopped and have brought back 7 bikes so far.

Furthermore you can claim back the VAT (currently 17.5%) when taking the bike out of the EU. Just ask for a VAT Refund Form when purchasing the bike, have it stamped at HM Customs, post it back to the shop and they will refund it into your credit card. Some shops don't always know how to do it, so I suggest Evans Cycles (they're the biggest cycle shop in the UK).
