Ok, so I want to rebuild my Eddy Merckx classic frame with an old 6 speed click gear system. The problem is that the hub on the rear wheel I have is 8/9 speed compatible. Would it be possible to fit a 6 speed gear ratio on this hub?

thanx

I would think that the spacing between the gears could pose a problem as where would you find such a spacer for these "new" type hubs. I still have some of those old 6 speed cluster- the ones that are one unit and screw onto the rear hub, but that is obviously not going to work here- unless off course I could fit a fixed gear hub- that would mean I would have to have rear wheel respoked.

I have an old six speed wheel.......

I also had one- which is now lying somewhere on the rubish dumps- nogal had campy record hubs. How I regret that decision now- never thought that I would need it sometime in the future!! I have the brake calipers and other campy stuff that's going on it though.

I am obviously trying to get by with what I've got, but if I cannot make a plan are you preparred to donate that wheel for a good cause ;)

tedibear would you like to explain why not?

I think it could work as as far as I know the monster energy DH team runs 6sp instead of 9 on a 9sp hub

i recently was fixing one of my old wheels had a 7sp free hub on. the size of the freehub is smaller than that of the 8/9sp freehub.

you might be able to fit a smaller freebody onto the hub to fit a 6sp. if you can find one

i'm assuming here that its a 6sp slide on cassette and not a screw on cluster.

They use a specially modified free hub body tha is capable of running a 9t instead of the standar 11t

6-speed hubs measure 120mm between jamb nuts (drop-outs) whereas 8-speed and more measure 130mm. MTB hubs are 135mm wide and tandem, 145...just for reference.

Therefore if you want to fit a 6-speed cluster (not cassete, I assume) to your bike, you'll have to find a 120mm screw-on wheel and 6-speed freewheel. I have a couple such clusters, brand new, if you'd like one. However, I cannot help you with a 120mm screw-on hub. The ones I have are part of a long term plan. They are pretty common though and you'll find one somewhere for peanuts.
