Hi,

Im going to be honest and say I am not that clued up on supplements etc. I also believe that eating properly is the right way to go. But i have noticed that since our half ironman training programme has stepped up i am struggling to recover the used muscle group before we train again. I have been told to try glutamine. the other one is Whey Protein. Are they correct or is there anything else to take or not to take.

Any advice is welcome.

Dude you should probably go and see a dietitian. Medical aid will pay and you will only need to see him / her once to get a proper eating plan. You are probably not eating the correct foods at the correct time or you are not replacing the calories you are burning off during training.

Iron man training is tough and most people complain that they never get enough recovery time.

My advice - forget the supplements, they are costly and by having a correct diet you will get the correct supplements.

Sounds like you eat reasonably well, so I'd guess that the problem is with over-training and will most likely not be solved with supplements. Cut a few hrs off the program and see how your recovery goes.

That said, I'm also a guy that believes in eating real food (rice, meat, potato, veg etc.) and don't take well to the idea of living from USN powders...

There are a couple of issues:

1. Have u been doing this before, if Yes then you need to look at what worked and what didnt. If it is NO then you need to look at training Load and diet.

2. Diet-go to a proper dietician that knows sports people, like at the Sports Clinic. Not someone who is used to weaning fat people off KFC.

3. Rest and by that I mean get enough sleep.

4. Training Load and intensity- u need to look at waht has changed in ur programme recently and adapt.

Finally Glutamine and Whey. Dont know much about Glutamine but familiar with whey. Whey is Ok, but proper Whey not the USN etc crap get Solgar if you want to go with Whey, ur kidneys will thank you.

I had the same problems when i was training for my first IM70.3 - body was taking a beating. The problem with that your training program (usually) doesn't take into account how your body is feeling (if your coach is any good, they'll adjust your program when you tell them how you are really feeling - be honest on your training log. that's if you ahve a coach). If you are knackered a hard run/bike could do more bad than good. Rest is just as important as training. I also just took a good multi vitamin to ensure I was getting the right stuff in my body - and obviously ate healthy, and watched what was fueling my system.

One seasoned triathlete gave me three valuable tips before I started my IM training in all seriousness:

1) Train wisely (obviously in IM your body will take a hammering, so to a degree you need to get used to it, but it's pointless breaking yourself week in, week out).

2) Eat correctly

3) Suppleness (your muscles take a beating, ensure you stretch often to keep the muscles in good shape)

Good Luck - you'll love IronMan, it's awesome!
