Hi there guys

Im pretty new to mtb and im really getting into it. Im using my old Giant Boulder and would like an upgrade. Im a student so huge amounts of tin aren't available. Ive saved +-R6k.I would like to buy new.

Ive looked at the 2010 Mongoose Tyax Super which seems to be great value for money &

Ive looked at the 2010 Giant Terrago Disc which also seems really good.

Main difference i noticed was the Rock Shox on the mongoose compared to a Suntour, I hear Rock Shox are better but im still new and have no idea. Also the difference of SRAM and Shimano? Apparently similar specs.

I know there are millions of bikes to choose from but those 2 Im keen on, suggestions or anyone agree or disagree?

Much appreciated

Hey Shaun - letting the Boulder go is a good idea!

For 6K you should be able to get a usable XC hardtail second-hand. Don't know the Terrago but have a few friends that ride the Tyax and are happy.

I prefer the Rockshox forks. Light, durable, easy to service.

I also prefer SRAM to Shimano but it's a personal thing. I like the more industrial feel of the SRAM. I mostly use SRAM X-0 but the X7 is fine - durable and reliable. Also consider grip-shifters rather than triggers... quicker shifting (you can load or drop the entire cassette at a time if you really want to). Takes a bit of getting used-to but I'm now a certified addict.

I built-up and sold a Merida TFS and a GT Zaskar team recently for around 6K each. Buying a well-specced second-hand bike is (my view) a waaaay better option than buying something new off the floor.

You're welcome to PM me for ideas / suggestions / biased opinions anytime...

Totally agree with Steelydan, bought my bike 2nd hand for a bargain price and I have no problems with it. Giant 4 life!

Shaun!

My budget was pretty much the same as you...

I opted for a Silverback Nebraska - decent bike, with some decent components (air shock, XT rear, everything else is SLX, hydraulic disc brakes etc...)

Was just over 6k...

they do however have the Silverback Phoenix which is pretty much spot on...

Go to Westdene Cycles, they have a broad range and the best prices. Check out Merida. Also don't get caught by anybody selling 2010 models unless they are significantly cheaper becuase 2011's are out and with the rand/euro being down in the last few months new bikes are cheaper.

Have a look at OBike I bought two bikes from them this year. Alternatively take a look at the classifieds and take an experienced buddy with you to look at the second hand bikes.

For me I prefer Shimano to Sram I just find the triggers to close together on sram. I think there is very little difference with frames as most(not all) come form the same factories anyway. With 6K you should be looking at Deore minimum if you go the shimano route and fox, manitou, dt swiss or rockshock forks. Once you found that take the frame the you like the best. Call Tania at Cycle lab Hillcrest. She is SO helpful and was a multiple S.A. champ to boot so she knows her stuff.

I looked into both those models earlier this year as well, the main difference is the frame material, I stand to be corrected if my memory has failed me, but the terrago is a lighter alloy frame versus the heavy mongoose frame. You will have a longer 'usage' life span with a lighter frame material (By that I mean, the heavier frame won't break, you'll just want to replace it for a lighter one sooner).

Incidentally, I ended up buying a silverback, great value for money and a great ride.
