MTO permits?

Squashed

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I heard somewhere that it is possible to get a permit that allows annual access to Jonkershoek and other MTO plantations.

Could not find much info on the web, and the MTO email addresses don't seem to work right now.

Where does one get a permit, if they are still available?

What is the arrangement - is one then allowed to ride say at Jonkershoek without the R25/day fee?

Cheers, FF.

Hi Fishface...

welcome to the Hub!!

Nope, your MTO permit will not allow you free access to Jonkershoek...as far as I know...

It will however, give you access to Grabouw area (Lebanon perhaps??)

I personally do not have a MTO permit but if you come right, I'd be interested!!

Hi Cassie - thanks man. Cool active forum this!

I'll try and phone around this week, and see what's what. Will post back here.

MTO plantations are basically state forestry. Not sure what the difference between them and SAFCOL is to be honest. But to answer the question it stands for Mountains To Oceans

Safcol unbundled and leased there forests off to private companies, MTO in the WC and EC to Longmore in PE, (I think) and Amatola Forestry Co. in the Border and Ciskei region.

yes it is possible to get a year permit! Simply take ID photos with the money (about R250 single / R350 family) to the gate at Jonkershoek, fill out a form, and your card will be ready in a week. Unfortunately no online application.

Hope this helps!

For people regularly riding Jonkershoek this is an absolute bargain. The permits are valid for a year from the date of issue. As soon as you apply/pay, you can ride for free. Conservatively estimated, my R 350 family permit which I renewed in June has allowed for visits to the tune of about R 1300 (calculated on R 25 per person per visit, 4 family members that can use it, but one has been in the USA for the past three months) over the last 4 months alone. Last year I would have spent about R 5 000 on entry fees for JH if I did not have a permit (OK, without the permit I would not have made use of JH nearly as much, but you get the picture).

Cool. Thanks :) Yep, also just chatted to the gentleman at the entrance hut there this morning. Definitely going to do that.

Sheesh it was nice at Jonkers this morning. Just threatened a bit of drizzle, but else cool and everything wet from the night.

(must figure out how to get emailed when someone posts a reply to a forum I mailed in... came back here to mention that I spoke to the chap etc., and everyone's already done it :P )
