Well it's not a conti, never had that issue before and do quite a lot of hours. A mission to change to a IDT tyre and put the other one on again for the road.

Just use a normal road tyre?

I'm still convinced its a marketing gimmic.

What is the reason/ benefit of an IDT tyre?

I believe that the IDT tire dissipates the heat a lot better than a normal road tire.

I'll see what the LBS has and may just go with a gatorskin, that's what I had on my last bike that I used on the IDT, and it was in one piece!

IDT tyre is made of a different compound compaired to the normal tyre.

I think only continental make IDT tyres

If this was a car tyre: from the look of the rubber "balls" at the edge of the failure it looks like a heat seperation, probably caused by low pressures for the load. Low pressure leads to heat build up = seperation.

Remember on an idt that the roller is pressed up against the tyre. Excess heat is caused by too much pressure of the roller for the tyre pressure or by too little causing wheel spin

I normally check my tire pressure before, but was running late this morning and forgot to. So I think it's totally feasible that it was a failure due to not being pumped up hard enough.

Definitely an expensive lesson learned today... ;)

And to top it off earlier in the week I had a flat on my car tire because I picked up a 2-inch nail!!! :(
