Best road route from Durbanville to Veldrif

Hey Hubbers

I am looking to cycle on the road bike from Durbanville to Veldrif this weekend. (Family outing planned, and why not mix it up with a LSD ride) The predicted Southerly winds will hopefully make this a little more enjoyable!

I am looking for advice on which route option is the best.

I have driven the R27 from Melkbos North as far as Langebaan and while it has a good shoulder a lot of cars seem to use it and the road itself is pretty busy.

The other option presented by Google Maps is Drubanville > Malmesbury > R45 > Right onto R27 for last section to Veldrif.

Anyone know if this road has a shoulder and any idea of the road surface?

Any tips or feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Surface is rough/course but decent shoulder. some of the R45 is actaully quite smooth.

take an ipod...its desolate.

I think the r45 is a trucking route so I rode on the right towards traffic for safety

Expecting in the region of 150-160km, seriously hoping for that tail wind!

Windguru forecasts South Easter for several days now... Good news, man!

Hey Friday Hubbers

Anyone got anything to contribute about the option to head up the R27??

Thanks,

Mike

my folks have a place in yzerfontein so I've done R27 to there a few times.

road surface is a bit bumpy,

cars come flying past,

and scenery doesn't change much.

there's a few nice places to stop for cooldrink along the way.

your other option to malmesbury is probably not much better.

another plan is to go through atlantis and then mamre, darling and then (i think its dirt) to morreesburg.who cares about a bit of dirt, should be hard enough right now. that's probably the least traffic route.

whichever way you choose, it's not really an exciting trip. i lok forward to you proving me wrong!

your best reference guide would probably be to go searching through bike touring blogs. a lot of them end/start cape town.

Hey Guys

Ride went pretty well, took the Malmebury > R45 option. The tail wind did not make an appearance though! Had more of a cross wind all the way along the R45 coming from my right.

Covered 120 KM before the support vehicle caught up with me and was pretty glad that they did!

As everyone said the route is pretty desolate but I did enjoy the quiet.

Enjoy the week and thanks again for the feedback.
