I've been MTB'ing for about 6 months and am looking for a entry level road bike so that i can mix things up a bit. What should i be looking to spend and which bikes are value for money? will probably only ride the road bike 1 or 2 times a week, and at a few of the bigger road events.

It doesn't have to be light, easier for me to lose 2 kg than pay more for 2kg less.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi,

Yes Mongoose, I will 2nd you on that one. But Big Til try and buy the best you can afford. It might save you a few R's if you realy get into it and want to upgrade later.

I have recently done the same thing and I bought a secondhand 2008 Raleigh RC6000 - R5000 on gumtree - heavy - 9.7kg for a 54cm - but strong & cheap with a 105 group set, so good value for money - my plan is to give a try, if I like road cycling then I will upgrade. Raleighs may not be the 'coolest' bike out there - but hey - value for money & reliability is always cool on one level.

quite a few good used bikes come up here, then you can upgrade groupset to something contemporary in the future if you so desire. You pay a premium for Carbon frames, its not a must have for the average cyclist, buck best spent in groupo.

I built up a roadbike from a lovely Cannondale frame I got here (thanks Caad), ended up costing R10K+ but very happy with it. Wheel upgrade is next but I will build them myself when I can get the right components.
