So my dear wife unsuspectingly gave her secret away...I'll be getting an IDT as Christmas prezzie.

I know the ideal would probably be a wheel, cluster and tyre. Buy thats ot possible right now. I've seen there are IDT specific wheel, BUT my question is, would a normal "slick tyre" work as well?

Thanks

Good question which I have also been pondering and not yet bothered to research.

IMO yes a normal slick (mtb size) would work just dandy but would be better if you could buy a specific IDT slick tyre that fits a mtb rim.

Question is does such a tyre exist?

MTB slick works just fine but you will find that some of the rubber heats up so much that it creates a rubber spatter on the floor. Its not serious but the wife might not like it that much.

The other option in a IDT specific tyre from Conti or Trax(?)

Conti is orange colour and avalible in Road or MTB around R 350

The IDT specific tyre is smoother and quieter and well worth it.

I have also seen a blue coloured one - I think that is from Trax.

I suspect it is best to use a dedicated IDT tyre; yellow (Conti) or blue (Tacx) are the ones I know of. I have only used the Tacx one so far, it works well and it seems to last well, as I am still on the first one.

A slick tyre will work as well, but it makes a mess with the rubber bits flying off. It also adds a thick rubber layer on the IDT roller. I guess this is due to the heat build-up; the proper IDT tyre runs a lot cooler and thus lasts longer.

It is the least hassle to use a dedicated wheel for the IDT, but cheaper to just buy a cluster / centrelock rotor tool + chainwip and then you can swap clusters as you wish.

Thanks Vinny just what I wanted to hear.

I'm looking at getting a new "A frame" type IDT trainer to supplement my spinning bike for this winter and need to do everything possible to keep the noise down.

Thanks Guys, great advice

Saw on cwc that they have a Tacx 26x1.25 for R299....maybe something worth considering (but out of stock at the moment)

Maybe just get a slick for now.

Luckily the IDT will stand in MY garage (wife only goes in there when leaving for work in her little car)
