Hey all

I'm thinking about getting a roadbike to train instead of wearing out the mtb.

What region would I need to budget for money wise if I want to build one up using parts from the web or hub ?

May get a frame and then build onto that.

Or buy a complete bike off the hub ?

Alternatively I see KHS has a roadbike (flite 300 ? ) for under 6k, is that any good ?

Any other new bikes to look at ?

Any help with regard to setup/spec would be appreciated as I know zilch about road bikes.

Would like to fit eggbeaters so I can use the same shoes, or are road shoes/pedals recommended ? Why ?

Thanks,

WW.

The wider pedal platform of road pedals seems to be more comfortable and less prone to causing hot spots that a small eggbeater might. My2cw. If you don't want to shell out big, buy the Olympic shoes at Sportsman's, good value, perfect for training. Enjoy the speed, it's addictive....

Market is way down at the moment so you could pick up a fair bike pre-owned for about 6k. If it is for training only then I would suggest finding something with a nice frame or groupset and then using it to upgrade later if the road bug bites.

Use egg beaters for now. If you can handle them on an MTB no reason to change on the road as it will just mean either a 2nd set of shoes or wearing you bolt holes out on your current shoes. And dont worry bout what people have to say about using your MTB shoes on the road. Where are you based? Maybe someone knows some good pre-owned stores or a bud who is selling a bike. Jan/Feb are great times to buy when no one has bucks.

Also think that you will get a better deal buying a 2nd hand bike rather than building at the moment.

Probably but there is nothing more satisfying than building your own bike from scratch! You learn quite a bit.
