Hi All - am I missing something here? I bought 2 x 10spd chain links, used my chain breaker to detach a link and now cannot get either of the 2 chain links to close, even if they not on the chain. My spare 9 spd connects easily?

It sounds to me like you found yourself a SRAM Powerlink, the curse of sanity.

Is it black with a large cut-out? If so, it is a use-once link that snaps in place through a powerful pull on the pedal with the link in the tension cycle of the chain.

If they are the SRAM ones I believe they are 'single use' so don't just click in and out. Quite tough to get them clicked in and impossible (almost ;) ) to remove ....

Disclaimer - that is only my humble opinion and open to possible critique from the 'ub ekspets

While we on the subject of chains, please make sure that when you buy pins for Shimano you make sure the shop knows that there are difference 10 speed pins and NOT one fits all 10 speed. You may just end up on the ground with a broken body and chain.

yes - it is sram...

is there a 10spd "chain link" that you use repeatedly to "unclip" your chain...I used to use the ones on my 9spd rather easily, hence the frustration at present

Yes, a Shimano one would do.

Cool, I walked into a shop the other day and asked for a DA 7800 and 7801 series pin. They guy looks at me funny. So I said, one pin with 2 grooves and one pin with 3 grooves please. He walks away confused and comes back with 2 pins with 2 grooves. Here you go sir, these will fit your DA chain. So I said, no, I need a 3 groove as well. He says, sir, all 10 speed chains use the same pins. I told him he needs to read up on his stuff as there are different thickness of DA 780x chains, etc.

He tells me not to argue with him as he has been working in a LBS for 10 years and has never sold anything but the one pin. I walked out.

No wonder guys break their chains around town.

Shimano doesn't make chain links of this type. They want you to buy pins.

Then what do you call a CN-NX01 and SM-CN79 Quicklink?

Looks like cyanide nitrous oxide to me? Are you saying Shimano does make quick links?

I have not bought one recently , but I know that they have them. I even see they are still on their North American site eventhough some guys complained about the 7900 series. I bought a 7800 series quick link.

I think it is more the SA importers who don't import everything.

Like the Carbon DA 7800 crank!!!!! Freak it was beautiful!
